The Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is a senior leader responsible for designing and executing the company’s comprehensive health, safety, and environmental strategy across all operational areas, including steel fabrication, detailing, coating, fireproofing, galvanizing, and field service activities (scaffolding, insulation, and field coatings). This role oversees a team of EH&S Technicians and ensures consistent implementation of safety programs, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation across multiple plant sites and customer locations. The Director serves as the primary authority on EH&S matters, managing regulatory reporting, serious incident investigations, and contractor compliance through platforms like Avetta and ISNetworld (ISN). The position emphasizes strategic leadership, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration to foster a culture of safety excellence and operational integrity throughout the organization. Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise and mentor EH&S Technicians across all plant and field locations. Provide strategic direction and ensure consistent execution of EH&S programs. Promote a proactive safety culture through coaching, recognition, and accountability. Program Development & Compliance
Develop and maintain EH&S policies and procedures tailored to operations in steel fabrication, detailing, coating, fireproofing, galvanizing, and field services. Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, ANSI, and other applicable regulatory standards. Oversee contractor safety compliance using platforms such as Avetta and ISNetworld (ISN), including onboarding, documentation, and performance tracking. Audits, Risk Assessment & Incident Management
Direct the planning and execution of safety and environmental audits; review findings and approve corrective actions. Personally lead investigations of serious incidents and regulatory violations, ensuring root cause analysis and preventive measures are implemented. Review and validate incident reports and safety metrics prepared by EH&S Technicians. Training & Education
Oversee the development and delivery of EH&S training programs, including onboarding, annual refreshers, and specialized modules. Ensure training content meets regulatory standards and is customized for plant and field operations. Monitor completion rates and effectiveness of training programs across all sites. Emergency Preparedness & Response
Lead the development and implementation of emergency response plans and procedures. Coordinate company-wide emergency drills and evaluate readiness. Serve as the primary contact for emergency response coordination and external agency communication. Reporting & Documentation
Prepare and submit corporate-level reports to regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA logs, EPA emissions reports). Maintain oversight of EH&S documentation including inspection records, training logs, and incident reports. Analyze safety performance data and present findings to executive leadership; recommend strategic improvements. Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner with HR on workers’ compensation claims, return-to-work programs, and employee wellness initiatives. Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and field service teams to integrate safety protocols into daily workflows. Advise procurement and project management on EH&S considerations for equipment, materials, and customer site requirements. Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field. Preferred certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM). Experience & Skills
Minimum 7 years of EH&S experience in a heavy manufacturing or industrial setting, with at least 3 years in a leadership role. Proven experience managing EH&S programs across multiple sites, including field operations. Strong working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, ANSI, and other relevant standards. Experience using contractor management platforms such as Avetta and ISNetworld (ISN). Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Proficiency in EH&S software systems and Microsoft Office Suite. Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Based in Amite, Louisiana with multi-site responsibilities; local travel required, with up to 25% extended travel. Work in industrial environments with exposure to high noise levels, elevated temperatures, dust, fumes, and chemicals; work around heavy machinery and moving equipment. Stand, walk, and climb stairs or ladders; bend, kneel, and crouch in confined or elevated spaces. Wear PPE including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and respiratory protection. Lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally; visual and auditory acuity to identify hazards and respond to alarms.
