Job Description

Design Engineer II JOB DIMENSIONS Job Summary Under moderate supervision, apply advanced mechanical engineering principles and understanding to product development and product support projects; generate mechanical designs and drawings with appropriate fit, finish, and tolerances; perform analysis using simulation software, spreadsheet templates, and established reference manuals; participate in prototype and qualification testing; produce reports and documents in accordance with specification requirements; access ERP database for item/BOM information and utilize dashboards to track and provide visibility on progress. Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Reports to: R&D Engineering Supervisor

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Utilizes SolidWorks to produce 3D models, assemblies, and Y14.5 manufacturing drawings;

Determines fits and tolerances of mechanical parts and assemblies, including dimensional tolerances, stack-ups, GTOL, and finishing such as grind and polish, etc.;

Works closely with direct supervisor and teammates to generate new product concepts and solutions to issues with existing products;

Assembles prototype mechanical devices and systems for testing and qualifications, often with assistance from production teams but sometimes independently;

Generates test fixture designs and drawings using custom and off-the-shelf components;

Operates pressure test carts and flow loops to test prototype items independently or with assistance from production technicians;

Assists in Manufacturing Reject Report dispositions of items that violate drawing requirements and provide design review assistance to Manufacturing Engineers as required;

Utilizes Project Management dashboard to access task prioritization and provide feedback to direct supervisor on the statuses of specific tasks;

Utilizes Microsoft Excel to perform engineering calculations and analysis from scratch and using existing templates;

Utilizes SyteLine ERP to access inventory and production databases, working with the Manufacturing Engineering team to coordinate new item creation and adjustments to existing parts and BOMs;

Generates procedures and test plans for product qualifications and performance validation.

Utilizes SolidWorks Advanced Simulation tools to perform FEA and CFD studies of parts, assemblies and fluid control systems;

Performs other related duties, as assigned;

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES Any combination equivalent of, but not limited to, the following:

Experience / Education

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field;

Minimum 5-8 years of experience in the design and development of mechanical and / or electro-mechanical components, parts and systems; and

Working knowledge of casting design, machine shop and foundry practices and in the use of CAD equipment; trained in personal computer operation, applicable computer language, AutoCAD and SolidWorks CAD software programs, as well as basic knowledge of spreadsheet software programs such as Microsoft Excel.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

SolidWorks fluency and the ability to independently generate precision mechanical designs;

Microsoft Excel fluency and ability to create and use existing spreadsheets;

Proven experience and demonstrable command of advanced drafting practices per Y14.5;

Knowledge of basic fluid statics, dynamics and understanding of loads produced by pressures and flows;

Knowledge of common materials and their strengths/uses – including various stainless steels, aluminum alloys, and plastics like PTFE and Delrin;

DfMA experience utilizing casting processes, CNC milling, lathing, sheet metal, grinding, heat treat and plating. Ability to understand how to select an optimal manufacturing process and possesses the knowledge and experience in designing products with complex assembly methods and techniques;

Ability to produce designs using custom and COTS items and subcomponents;

Familiarity with ERP system navigation and engineering task management methods;

Ability to read and interpret industrial, military, and customer specifications for design, manufacturing and qualification test criteria;

Ability to use standard measurement and test equipment, such as calipers, meters, and gauges;

Ability to perform simple tests unassisted and prepare professional reports from templates and references; and

Ability to fluently communicate (read, write, and speak) in the English language.

Physical Requirements

Ability to operate office equipment such as computers, printers, filing cabinets, photocopiers and other office equipment, as applicable;

Ability to use a computer to access, enter and update various engineering, design and customer data and to produce or update designs, drawing or specifications and related correspondence or documentation;

Most work tasks are performed indoors where temperature is moderate and controlled by office environment systems;

Ability to work (sit and/or stand) at a desk for majority of the work day; walking and/or standing may be required for the remainder of the work day. Length of time performing these physical requirements may vary from day to day and task to task;

Requires grasping, writing, sitting, standing, walking, repetitive motions, pulling, pushing, listening and hearing ability, and visual acuity;

Ability to occasionally reach, lift and/or carry files, materials, and/or records weighing up to 15 lbs.; and

Ability to perform essential functions of the job, as defined;

Abilities not required, but a plus

Experience with electronic test monitoring devices, data recorders, and PLCs;

Hands‑on experience working with and testing electrical systems such as pressure transducers, flow meters, 4‑20mA analog devices, low power (0‑5VDC) sensors, electronic controllers, and data loggers;

Hands‑on experience conducting tests of hydraulic components or mechanical devices that the person in this role helped design or develop;

Basic knowledge of manufacturing processes (sand and investment castings, metal machining equipment) and/or prior exposure to products manufactured in machine shop environments; and

Ability to discuss and demonstrate an example of a design project in which the person in this role was an active participant.
