What to Expect (Job Responsibilities):
Assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient encounters ensuring accurate DRG assignment
Achieve and maintain 95% accuracy on quality reviews while meeting productivity standards
Abstract statistical data from medical records according to the employer's guidelines
Coach and train other coders on coding and abstracting according to established conventions
Collaborate with medical staff to clarify and complete records for accurate coding and billing
What is Required (Qualifications):
High school diploma required; must have completed an approved coding program or be a graduate of a Health Information Management program
Minimum of three (3) years of coding experience in an acute care Level I trauma hospital environment
Certification through the American Health Information Management Association as RHIT, RHIA, or CCS
Advanced knowledge of ICD-9/ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and reimbursement principles
Must score a minimum of 85% on a pre-employment coding test unless exempt
How to Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications):
Experience with physician office coding, charging, and billing
Knowledge of Epic EHR and 3M 360 coding and abstracting software
Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills
