Position Summary Serves as the Supervisor in charge of the Communications Center of the WashU Police Department. Responsible for organization and coordination of police related services pertaining to the Communications Center. Evaluates and determines appropriate actions on matters involving subordinates and operational effectiveness and efficiency within the Communications Center. Operates under the direction of the Operational Support Bureau Commander.
Scheduled Hours 40 hours per week
Responsibilities
Supervise and schedule Communications personnel.
Oversee team of Dispatchers and address personnel issues.
Serve as time reviewer and approver for assigned staff in HR System.
Conduct quality control reviews of radio/telephone traffic and CAD entries of Dispatcher II positions.
Conduct regular performance evaluations of staff.
Dispatch all calls for police services and transmit necessary information to police units, making entries into CAD system.
Monitor university’s card‑access, CCTV, burglar and fire alarm systems, dispatching appropriate agency in response to alarms.
Dispatch the Emergency Support Team on medical calls.
Create and maintain Dispatch policies and procedures; communicate updates to staff; enforce adherence to CALEA standards.
Department liaison to Simplex Fire Alarm System and C‑Cure 800 Card Access System.
Assist Facilities Department with trend identification and system troubleshooting.
Provide recommendations for Police Department access to additional data.
Serve as committee member of the Card Access Committee.
Plan, conduct, coordinate and maintain records for all Training within the Communications Center.
Coordinate quarterly Dispatch Staff meetings to distribute updates and promote teamwork initiatives.
Act as backup trainer and equipment coordinator.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Fast‑paced environment with simultaneous audio and visual signals.
May be required to work any shift and occasionally remain on duty beyond normal shift.
May have to report for duty without prior notice due to emergencies or staffing shortages.
Required to sit for extended periods.
Use of E‑911 Communications, CAD system, multi‑disciplined radio, normal office equipment.
Education & Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent, or combination of education and/or experience.
Required: 3 years Dispatch Communication Center experience. Must pass drug screen and criminal background investigation.
Preferred: One year WashU Dispatch Communications Center experience; previous dispatcher experience; ability to work all shifts; typing 35 wpm; familiarity with campus geography and department policies; knowledge of NCIC, MULES, REJIS, FCC guidelines; quick‑reaction skills; effective public interaction; emergency decision making; clear written communication.
Salary $25.47 – $39.49 per hour (grade G10‑H)
