Overview

Vascular Sonographer (Surgery Vascular Lab East Baltimore) role at Inside Higher Ed. The Department of Surgery is seeking a Vascular Sonographer. The Vascular Sonographer will perform various noninvasive laboratory diagnostic tests of venous and arterial disease. This individual will obtain a brief relevant medical history by interview and review of current and/or old medical records. Pertinent diagnostic findings will be documented in the vascular laboratory chart and discussed with the referring physician as required. The Vascular Sonographer works under the direct supervision of the Technical Director of the Vascular Laboratory, who is responsible to the Medical Director of the laboratory.

Responsibilities

Perform tests, collect imaging (digital or hard copy), and assemble data in the patient\'s vascular laboratory record.

Assess carotid arterial disease using duplex ultrasound imaging.

Evaluate venous insufficiency (deep and superficial) with duplex ultrasound; assess deep venous obstruction with duplex imaging.

Assess upper and lower extremity arterial disease by Doppler and cuff occlusion technique and/or duplex ultrasound scanning.

Assess lower extremity arterial disease at rest and after treadmill exercise; assess small arterial disease with photoplethysmography (PPG).

Assess renal and mesenteric arterial disease by duplex ultrasound imaging and assess abdominal arterial aneurysmal disease by duplex ultrasound.

Billing: prepare and file vouchers for tests performed with appropriate billing offices.

Maintain the laboratory in good working condition and manage laboratory supplies. Testing is performed on outpatients and inpatients of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Formulate a preliminary interpretation of test data and document interpretation in the patient\'s medical records when appropriate.

Advise physicians on the indications, performance, and reliability of tests as to the appropriateness of requested testing for the patient\'s clinical problem under evaluation.

Assist with correlation of vascular lab examinations with the Gold Standard and with the accreditation process (IAC) of the lab.

Contribute to patient, staff, vascular fellows, medical and surgical house staff, and student education in ultrasound basics and anatomy/physiology.

Participate in Ultrasound Students and Vascular Fellows training, education and scanning opportunities during rotation.

Contribute to the vascular lab operational planning and scheduling with the Lead Sonographer and Technical Director.

Work with the Technical Director and non-invasive vascular lab staff to develop and implement evolving policies and procedures dictated by the IAC Vascular board.

Perform day-to-day operations of the vascular lab when the Technical Director is not present. Tests may also support clinical research projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, or RVT eligible within the first year of employment. If not RVT, graduation from an accredited sonography school is required.

Minimum of 12 months of full-time clinical vascular testing experience with at least 600 noninvasive vascular examinations.

Ability to assist patients on and off examination tables and position patients for studies.

Ability to lift, push, and move large ultrasound equipment to perform tests bedside.

Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalency, per JHU equivalency formula.

Starting Salary Range: $29.80 - $52.50 HRLY (target $75,000; commensurate with experience)
