Job Overview The OB Surgical Technician assists the surgical team during obstetrical procedures, including cesarean sections and other gynecological surgeries, by preparing and maintaining the sterile field, passing instruments, and ensuring surgical equipment is available and functioning properly. They also assist with routine patient care activities under the supervision of nurses and physicians in the labor and delivery unit.
Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent
Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
Preferred
Minimum 1 year of experience in a surgical setting; labor and delivery experience highly desirable.
Certifications and Licenses Required
Certification by the Association of Surgery Technologists with NBSTSA
BLS certification required (American Heart Association)
Essential Functions
Prepares the operating room for cesarean sections and other OB/GYN procedures by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and necessary supplies
Scrubs in and maintains aseptic technique during surgical procedures
Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and passes instruments, sutures, and supplies during the procedure
Assists with positioning, prepping, and draping patients
Performs counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments with the RN according to hospital policy before, during, and after surgery
Ensures proper care and handling of surgical specimens
Decontaminates, cleans, and restocks surgical instruments and supplies after procedures
Assists in emergency situations such as stat cesarean sections, postpartum hemorrhage, and other obstetrical emergencies
Maintains competency in the care of neonatal resuscitation equipment
Assists with general patient care tasks such as vital signs, transport, and patient hygiene when needed
Stocks labor rooms, ORs, and supply carts, ensuring adequate supplies are available
Participates in quality improvement activities and attends required staff meetings and trainings
