Purpose of Position The Director of Housing Operations is responsible for the administration of a comprehensive housing program consisting of 16 residence halls and 162 apartments with a capacity of 5,300 students. The Director is responsible for planning, directing and overseeing all aspects of housing operations and reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement and Executive Director for Housing & Dining.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
Directly supervises the Assistant Director for Housing Administration, the Assistant Director for Marketing & Communications, two Housing Assistants and one Office Coordinator. Indirectly supervises 25 additional full-time staff members.
Hires, trains, supervises and conducts performance appraisals for the above listed staff.
Schedules, plans and directs the operations of the assignment office including housing applications and room selection for first year, upper class, transfer, athlete, international and exchange students. Oversees the Housing and Residence Life central office front desk and customer service.
Oversees the activities related to marketing, room assignments, technology, move-in/out procedures, exemptions process and apartment management.
Work collaboratively with and participate in a decision-making capacity with campus partners.
Oversees the summer housing application and assignment process, and directly supervises staff assigned to summer housing. Supports the staff planning and facilitating summer camps and conferences.
Serve as a liaison and coordinates assignments for Athletics, Student Disability Services, Kelly Autism Program, Living Learning Communities, the Honors College, the Gatton Academy for Mathematics and Science.
Develops customer service standards to establish rapport with constituents and resolve customer concerns and questions. Develop methods for ongoing communication with parents and residential students.
Serves as an administrator and main power user for housing software StarRez web and Portal-X, implementing processes, creating reports/sharing data, to ensure maximization of the software.
Coordinates the assignments and procedures for the ADA accommodations process.
Participates in on-call rotation, responds to emergencies and provides guidance to on-site staff.
Serves on the department's nine-member Leadership Team.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Participates on University committees, University recruitment activities, selection processes and other assignments as needed.
Attend state, regional and national conferences.
Knowledge and Skills Considered Essential for Success
Demonstrated critical thinking skills, strong oral and written communication skills and acute attention to detail.
Knowledge of student development theory, issues and trends.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse population.
Supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to supervise and lead professional staff.
Strong user of technology with experience in implementing new technology solutions.
Ability to manage complex situations simultaneously, coordinating both long term projects and immediate demands.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with occupancy management, facilities management, marketing and hands on day-to-day operations.
Ability to work independently and pursue innovative ideas and solutions.
Effective organizational and time management skills.
Physical and Mental Abilities
Ability to perform under pressure and requiring extended work hours.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and perform in a leadership capacity.
Performance Expectations The duties of this position must be performed in a competent manner following the highest standards for leadership, professionalism, integrity, accountability, cooperation and customer service.
Requirements
Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or related field.
Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in Housing and Residence Life, with specific experience in occupancy management.
