Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider provides high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care. This position serves patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with the Attending Physician and operates within a Collaborative APP/Physician team. The scope of practice is defined by a state-approved plan and the department, with collaboration from an Attending Physician(s). The Advanced Practice Provider works collaboratively with the medical team to deliver organized, timely, cost-effective and quality patient care. The role includes performing histories and physicals, ordering and interpreting tests, diagnosing, treating injuries/illness, assisting with surgical procedures, counseling patients and/or prescribing medications and those invasive procedures defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine. Essential Job Statements

Performance Expectation: Clinical & Patient Care Responsibilities Demonstrates mastery of treatment and patient care for the specialty population served and coordinates care across the continuum through the patient’s trajectory of illness. Assesses health status via history and physical examination, initiates screening, orders or performs diagnostic tests, provides direct patient care, assists with surgical procedures, provides therapeutic interventions, prescribes medications and counsels patients as appropriate for the population served. Initiates emergency procedures as needed; practices safety, environmental and infection control methods; makes rounds with attending physicians as necessary. Supervises and/or coordinates activities of patient care and support staff within the assigned area; documents all pertinent information in the medical record; interprets information and develops a treatment plan. Formulates and prioritizes short-term and long-term therapeutic plans; incorporates physical, spiritual, cultural and psychosocial aspects to promote optimal health; explores strategies to decrease length of stay and resource use; maintains effective communication with the health care team. Assists with coordination of care between primary and specialty health care services as needed. Performance Expectation: Consultation Functions as a consultant to other health care professionals in the multidisciplinary team for routine and unusual therapeutic interventions. Serves as a liaison, translator and negotiator for staff, patients and families; collaborates on development and monitoring of the multidisciplinary plan of care for complex patients. Shares responsibility for patient education, which may include the patient, family members or other caregivers; may provide training to residents, fellows and other staff; participates in ongoing assessment and revision of practices and procedures; promotes teamwork through effective communication and feedback. Performance Expectation: Research Utilizes current research to develop, implement and evaluate standards of care for identified patient populations; contributes to the profession through research, publications, consultation and/or educational activities; supports clinical trials within the specialty area. Performance Expectation: Ethical Decision Making Skills Incorporates clinical judgment in ethical decision making and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to resolve ethical dilemmas; negotiates and communicates to assist families facing ethical decisions; respects patient rights as a foundation for ethical decisions. Performance Expectation: Professional Development Seeks professional growth opportunities; collaborates with physicians, allied health professionals and administration; assesses learning needs and develops a growth plan; participates in educational programs, literature review, in-service and workshops; participates in teaching as needed; maintains certifications required for continued privileges. Performance Expectation: Miscellaneous Responsibilities Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCU Health; provides assistance to team members; accepts alternate assignments as required. Required Education:

Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife or Physician Assistant Program Preferred Education:

Service-specific education Licensure/Certification Required:

Current Virginia licensure from the appropriate Board as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant; current national certification as appropriate for the role; credentialing in accordance with medical staff bylaws for specific job titles; current CPR and BLS certifications; additional certifications (including ACLS, PALS for Pediatric services) may be determined at the department level. Years and Type of Required Experience: Previous clinical experience with the population served. Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Cultural responsiveness. Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred: Three (3) years of previous clinical experience with the population served; previous experience in an academic healthcare system. Working Conditions

Physical Requirements Physical Demands: Lifting/carrying (0-50 lbs.), (50-100 lbs.), (100+ lbs.); Push/Pull (0-50 lbs.), (50-100 lbs.); stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, climb, balance, bend. Work Position: Sitting, walking, standing. Additional Physical Requirements / Hazards Manual dexterity, shift work, maneuver weight of patients, respond to alarms, reach above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, finger dexterity, color vision, near and far acuity. Hazards: Exposure to latex gloves, chemicals/detergents, moving mechanical parts, dust/fumes, potential electrical shock, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high pitched noises; Gaseous risk exposure. Mental/Sensory Recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, logical thinking; ability to handle a fast-paced environment, high workload, frequent change.
