Overview
Certified Group Exercise Instructor - East Pasco Family YMCA. The Group Exercise Instructor reports to and takes day-to-day direction from the Group Exercise/Wellness Coordinator and/or the Wellness Director. The Group Exercise Instructor is an exceptional motivator as well as strong at relationship building in our member-centered environment. The instructor will deliver multiple options and a great experience during each class by presenting a positive image of the YMCA through quality fitness programs designed to meet the needs of the community. Classes may include, but are not limited to: Les Mills, Cycling, Step, Body Sculpting, Zumba, Yoga and Water Exercise classes. Responsibilities
Instruct members to maintain exertion levels to maximize benefits from exercise routines. Monitor member progress and adapt programs as needed. Observe members and inform them of corrective measures necessary for skill improvement. Evaluate individuals’ abilities, needs, and physical conditions, and develop suitable training programs to meet any special requirements. Offer variations of routines to accommodate all fitness levels. Provide appropriate direction to members performing dangerous or harmful exercises. Solicit feedback from participants about the class and answer questions to support healthy living goals. Maintain accurate class attendance records. Adhere to YMCA policies and procedures by operating programs within established guidelines. Maintain and clean equipment according to schedule and reset instruction space. Design and lead special programs as needed, including planning, coordinating, presenting, and promoting programs, classes, and events. Explain and enforce safety rules governing sports, recreational activities, and use of exercise equipment. Ensure own class coverage when unavailable to attend. Perform other duties as assigned by the Group Exercise Coordinator and/or the Wellness Director. Follow YMCA safety, health, and welfare policies; respond to emergencies per facility policies and certification requirements. Complete all job-related meetings and trainings as required. Support the mission during Annual giving events. Water exercise classes must be taught from the pool deck. Perform any other duties as assigned. Safety and Risk Management
Adhere to all Federal, State, and local safety regulations and YMCA policies related to safety, health, and welfare of members, participants, guests, and staff. Ensure Tampa YMCA standards and policies, including emergency procedures and child abuse prevention, are implemented and followed. Adhere to policies for managing high-risk activities and supervising participants and boundaries when applicable. Ensure training requirements, including risk management and child abuse prevention, are completed and incidents/accidents are reported per risk management procedures. Maintain a safe and healthy environment, including daily safety checks of program areas, equipment, and supplies. Maintain proper records, including certifications, meetings, and trainings. Maintain emphasis on safety in all responsibilities related to members and staff. Front desk responsibilities include ensuring proper sign-in/out and authorized access. Create and maintain a safe, positive, and respectful environment for members, guests, and staff. Report any suspicious or inappropriate behavior or policy violations per established procedures. Position Requirements
Education/Experience Required
Must be at least 18 years of age or older. National certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM, Les Mills, Zumba) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification. Yoga instructors must have a current Yoga-specific certification (200+ hours). Water Exercise Instructors must have a current water instructor certification. At least one year of experience instructing group exercise classes preferred. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with groups and/or individuals from different backgrounds. Must be well-organized and prepared to teach classes. Represent the YMCA in a positive manner. Certifications/Trainings Required
Must obtain within 30 days of employment and then maintain current certifications in community CPR/AED and First Aid. Maintain position-specific required certifications as stated in the training matrix (relevant Group Ex certifications). Work Environment and Physical Demands
Plan, lead, and participate in classes and activities; communicate program content verbally and physically. Hear participant discussions and questions; perform physical aspects of the position including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, teaching from the pool deck, and lifting. Lift equipment and perform all physical aspects including climbing or bending as needed; respond to noises and distress signals in the program environment. Flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances. Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds; stand for extended periods. Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Work in environments with humidity/dampness, heat, and cold; typical moderate noise level. Occasional travel for training; availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed; support class coverage. Wear appropriate fitness attire and footwear; maintain professional appearance and ensure visibility of proper form and movement.
