Job Profile Summary
This role focuses on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. It involves performing surgical services such as excision or incision procedures, including interventional pain management. The technologist helps maintain a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive procedures or surgery. This senior‑level role requires broad knowledge of operational procedures, tools, vocational or technical education, and may lead and train entry‑level employees while working under limited supervision.
Job Overview This position is an expert Surgical Technician who practices under the supervision of the surgical team in the Operating Room to deliver patient care throughout the perioperative experience. The technician assists the Surgeon during surgery by providing appropriate instruments and maintaining and organizing operating room equipment. The role follows department and hospital policies, coordinates services, and collaborates to create a system of quality health care.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Prior to July 1, 2013, employed as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility; OR successfully completed a training program for surgical technology in the military; OR graduated from an accredited Surgical Tech Program.
After July 1, 2013, Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) is required.
3 – 8 years of healthcare experience.
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Duties and Responsibilities
Function professionally and independently as the Surgical Technologist in the Operating Room during all stages of surgical procedures.
Maintain strict aseptic technique during set‑up, patient draping, and during the surgical procedure.
Scrub on surgical cases, organize instruments for the surgeon, and participate in surgical counts.
Select and prepare appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical cases.
Perform related activities under the direction of the surgeon.
Perform all counts with the circulating nurse per Operating Room policy.
Manage all intraoperative medications per Operating Room policy.
Manage surgical specimens per Physician’s orders and hospital policy.
Follow operating room procedures for decontamination of instrumentation, equipment, and room turnover.
Assist in positioning, moving, and transporting patients as needed.
Report equipment and supply problems to the Charge Nurse, Service Lead, or Clinical Nursing Director.
Assists with positioning and obtaining needed items during surgery and assists in room turnover activities when not on a case.
Participate in operating room activities related to quality improvement, continuing education, orientation of new personnel, and emergency preparedness.
Remain knowledgeable about service‑specific equipment for safe and efficient utilization.
Maintain a collaborative work relationship with peers to create a positive work environment.
Perform the role of preceptor for staff in training.
Assist in orientation of new personnel (e.g., aides, orderlies, technicians, nurses) to operating suite protocols, policies, rules, and regulations.
Display leadership qualities and act as a role model and mentor.
Remains knowledgeable about equipment across multiple surgical specialties.
Physical Requirements
Work within the semi‑restricted and restricted environment of the Operating Room and perioperative support areas.
Stand under hot surgical lights for prolonged periods.
Lift patients and heavy equipment, and handle cautery units and autoclaves, with risk of cuts from sharp instruments.
Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, extreme noise, radiation, lasers, and temperature fluctuations.
Wear a protective lead apron for extended periods; potential exposure to radioactivity and harmful anesthesia gases.
Frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, equipment, power tools, instruments, etc.
Contact patients, physicians, and nursing staff in the operating room.
Skills & Abilities
Expert knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention practices.
Advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology for optimal patient care.
Intermediate knowledge of computers, surgical equipment, and infrastructure.
Intermediate knowledge and skills necessary to care for patients throughout their lifespan.
Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with staff, patients, physicians, vendors, and other departments.
Demonstrates superior knowledge and expert clinical practice while assisting with advanced procedures in their specialty.
Displays expert knowledge of advanced instrumentation and surgical equipment used in their specialty area.
Shows excellent knowledge of procedures performed outside their specialty and supports multiple service lines.
