The Senior Director of Strategic Communications will serve as a key member of the organization’s executive team to lead the strategic direction, development, and execution of the organization’s communications strategy. The ideal candidate will oversee a multidisciplinary team responsible for storytelling, media relations, digital content, and creative services. The candidate will ensure consistent, compelling messaging across all owned and earned channels to engage and influence key stakeholders, including military-connected job seekers, employers, funders, and public sector partners. The senior director will be responsible for overseeing one direct report and managing a team of seven people, including full-time employees, dedicated consultants, and contractors. Responsibilities

Lead the communications team, including cross-functional staff, external consultants, and contractors to develop and implement a unified messaging strategy aligned with organizational goals. Serve as the organization’s lead strategist for brand voice, narrative development, and message discipline across all platforms. Stay current on industry trends, audience insights, and best practices to inform innovative communications approaches. Promote a culture of creativity, collaboration, and accountability within the communications team. Oversee the creation and distribution of high-impact content across digital, print, and media channels, delivering complex projects and initiatives with a keen strategic focus. Develop and maintain strong relationships with media outlets and journalists to secure earned media coverage. Serve as a senior adviser and coach for organizational spokespeople, including media training and message preparation. Ensure brand consistency and quality control across all communications materials. Tailor messaging to effectively reach and resonate with diverse audiences, including the military community, employers, funders, and government stakeholders. Collaborate across internal teams to amplify programmatic impact and elevate the organization’s thought leadership. Represent the organization at events, in the media, and with key partners to advance the mission and visibility of the organization. Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure communications effectiveness and inform strategy. Manage communication budgets and vendor relationships. Mentor and develop team members, fostering professional growth and high performance. Collaborate cross-functionally with development, programs, and executive leadership to align messaging and support organizational priorities. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field. Minimum of 15 years’ relevant experience in strategic communications, public relations, or marketing, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Minimum of 8 years’ management experience, with the proven ability to mentor and coach teams toward success. Preference for experience managing geographically dispersed teams. Demonstrated success in developing and executing integrated communications strategies. Proven experience managing high-performing teams and cross-functional initiatives. Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with a portfolio of impactful content. Familiarity with communications technology platforms, analytics tools, and media monitoring systems. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team and at all levels of the organization. Ability to deliver outstanding service in a fast-paced, demanding environment. Experience working with or on behalf of the military community is strongly preferred. The salary range for this position is $107,900.00 to $150,000.00. The actual salary paid for this position will vary based on market data, an applicant’s qualifications, relevant degrees, certifications, and other factors.
