Position: Counselor Advocate, Queens-Manhattan Community Program Department: Community Programs Location(s): Manhattan, with frequent travel to Queens Reports To: Manager Work Model: Hybrid, working 2-3 days per week on-site Classification: Full Time, Non-exempt Pay Rate: $55,000/year, non-negotiable Established by Black and Latina activists in 1984, the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) is New York City’s only culturally-specific organization dedicated to ending domestic and sexual violence within Latine communities. VIP supports survivors and their families through education, outreach, and advocacy, and provides a continuum of services across Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens. The Counselor Advocate provides comprehensive crisis intervention and self-empowerment counseling in both individual and group settings, and is responsible for direct services in the form of comprehensive case assessment, case management, and advocacy related to criminal legal, social welfare, housing, immigration, and other related systems. Essential Functions

Conduct initial needs assessments on all clients and their children to identify needs and goals during the initial intake and reevaluate as necessary. Provide intensive case management services based on the program participant(s) needs/goals and their service plan, including weekly scheduled case management sessions. Provide personal support for families, including translation and accompaniment services related to public assistance, housing, school/education placement, health services, and other unforeseen needs. Provide information and referrals; advocacy and accompaniment to participants throughout legal, immigration, social and human resources systems (phone, in-person, and written correspondence). Assist participants with educational needs by advocating for tutoring services, school placement, parental involvement, and medical services. Stay informed about changes in entitlements and benefit resources for information and referrals, and advocate to secure needed services. Maintain proper documentation (case notes, reports, and statistical information) in a timely manner for all clients. Develop service plans with measurable outcomes and services identified by the program and funding source, including outcomes information for counseling plans. Assess client safety consistently and create safety plans as needed. Provide crisis support and promote self-esteem/motivation, including referrals to outside therapeutic services as needed. Validate and support strength-based counseling focused on personal wellness and independence. Work with age-appropriate clients on conflict resolution, separation, and diversity issues (cultural, religious, sexual orientation, etc.). Provide interventions that promote positive relationships between clients, families, community, institutions, and schools. Facilitate weekly, monthly, and/or bi-monthly age-appropriate bilingual support groups. Provide counseling, case management, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary service providers and law enforcement to deliver wraparound services for walk-in clients at the Family Justice Center. Work collaboratively with staff and other service providers to ensure high-quality service delivery. Adhere to mandated reporting requirements related to child abuse/neglect, suicide/homicide concerns, etc. Attend and participate in regularly scheduled agency and program meetings, trainings, case conferences, and inter-disciplinary meetings. Conduct community outreach and/or educational workshops as needed by the program. Report language access issues to the Deputy Director for Programs and the Executive Director. Capacity building across programs, including competency in incorporating financial literacy into responsibilities. Perform other tasks as required, including related administrative duties. Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience Fully bilingual required (English/Spanish – verbal and written) Advocacy and/or counseling experience in domestic violence, women and children’s issues, or related field Strong verbal and written communication and documentation skills Well-organized, able to work independently and with a team, with a flexible schedule Culturally competent service delivery, with experience working with diverse communities, particularly Latinx, people of color, and low-income populations Proficiency with office equipment and software, including Microsoft Office and client databases Ability to exercise good judgment, compassion, and trauma-informed care Commitment to confidentiality and to working collaboratively in a team Passion for intersectional social justice issues impacting survivors of trauma Compensation & Benefits
