Overview
Assistant Director/Director of Youth Services Librarian, Ashland Public Library (Ashland, MA). 40 hour/week position with full benefits. Salary range $65,000 - $75,000. This role is ideal for a current children’s librarian with some management experience seeking the next step. Responsibilities
The Assistant Director also acts as Director of Youth Services, responsible for outreach, programming, budgeting, collection development and planning and implementation of services to children and families. Assist the Director in professional and administrative work including scheduling, payroll and payment of invoices; help manage all library activities and services. Assume responsibility for the library in the absence of the Library Director. Supervise and collaborate with part-time library staff and volunteers in the Children’s Department; supervise in collaboration with the Library Director. Maintain records and prepare monthly reports for the Library Director concerning services and programs. Engage in outreach to schools, educational organizations, town departments, and community events; promote the Children’s Department through outreach, website, social media, and print materials. Represent the library at public events and professional settings; build relationships with library staff, town departments and the Minuteman Library Network. Participate in professional development and stay informed about trends and technology in the library field. Perform circulation duties and assist in administering library services and daily operations as needed. Work flexible shifts including some evenings and weekends. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Knowledge:
Professional knowledge of library science principles, with substantial knowledge of children’s literature, interests, development, and services related to children. Abilities:
Apply professional knowledge to the assessment and development of children’s services; supervise others; plan, organize and direct programs for children; communicate effectively with children, adults, parents and caregivers; establish positive working relationships with parents, schools, and community. Skill:
Strong technology skills (Word, Excel, Google Suites, Canva, WordPress); social media is a plus. Physical and Mental Requirements
Physical:
Lift up to 30 pounds. Motor:
Operating computer, handling documents and related tasks. Visual:
Read and interact with computer devices and printed materials daily. Schedule
Permanent, full-time (40 hours). One evening per week (likely Thursday) until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday work on a rotating basis (first and third Saturdays; Friday switch). Reports To
Library Director Qualifications
Education and Experience: Master’s Degree in Library Science with coursework in children’s literature or services and at least two years of experience in children’s services, including book selection and programming; equivalent combination of education, training and experience considered. A related degree (e.g., early childhood education, elementary education, or child psychology) is a plus. MBLC certification emphasis in children’s librarianship may be considered. Employment Details
