Overview
Veterinary Surgical & Clinical Support Tech. (Research Animal Resources) role at Inside Higher Ed. The Veterinary Surgical & Clinical Support Technician will provide anesthesia and clinical support for pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, nonhuman primates, sheep and ferrets. Responsibilities include supporting recovering post-operative animals, assisting veterinarians during clinical surgeries and case management, and ensuring compliance with research protocols and applicable regulations. Clinical and Research Support: Administer medications via multiple routes (including oral and parenteral). Perform routine sedation and monitoring for anesthetic procedures, diagnostic work-ups, sample collection, post-operative care, and palliative care. Sedation and minor procedures for protocol support (e.g., euthanasia, examination, diagnostic sample collection). Health maintenance for large animal species (e.g., hoof and nail trimming, TB testing, routine weights). Provide technical support for faculty and resident veterinarians during clinical and surgical care (anesthesia and monitoring). Post-operative monitoring and care; maintain a clean and prepared Recovery facility (setup, breakdown, sanitization, stocking supplies and drugs). Understand large animal research protocols, humane endpoints, and experimental goals; ensure compliance with protocols, regulations and policies. Pre-release examination on non-human primates in quarantine (including final chest radiograph, body weight, TB testing and phlebotomy). Other duties as assigned. Veterinary Surgical Support: Perform anesthesia induction for protocol-driven and clinical procedures. Prepare animals for procedures (pre-anesthetic meds, IV access, intubation, clipping/scrubbing, drug administration and monitoring). Endotracheal intubation for difficult species (including sheep, macaques, rabbits, swine). Serve as operating room nurse and surgical assistant; manage anesthetic emergencies (emergency notification to veterinarian, CPR). Maintain OR suite (staging, breakdown, sanitization, instrument packaging, inventories of controlled substances, drugs, and supplies). Maintain clinical and surgical equipment (radiology and anesthesia machines, ECG, cautery, autoclaves). Operate special equipment (mechanical ventilators, invasive BP monitoring, radiography, syringe pumps for CRI). Assist investigators in research protocols (e.g., maintaining anesthesia during MRIs, PET scans, and other studies). Teaching: Train investigators, veterinary residents, and technical staff in technical procedures and routine clinical care, including anesthesia for various species. Administrative Responsibilities: Maintain clinical animal records (paper and electronic); complete monitoring forms and project-specific documentation; stock OR and Recovery facilities and notify when stock is low; maintain accurate controlled substance logs; prepare charges for services; participate in staff meetings; prepare anesthesia sheets (drug calculations). Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of regulations for care and use of laboratory animals; skills with catheterization, intubation, drug calculation and anesthetic monitoring (ventilator experience preferred); ability to restrain animals safely; follow detailed instructions; read/write for records and labels; interact professionally with faculty, students, staff, and visitors; discuss animal projects with investigators and report to veterinarians and manager; work under safety equipment; lift up to 50 lbs. Minimum Qualifications: Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology or related discipline; some related experience; JHU equivalency may apply; additional education may substitute for experience. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science or related field; Registered Veterinary Technician license strongly preferred; Registered Laboratory Animal Technician strongly preferred.
