The Company:

AI Proteins is a Boston-based biotechnology company focused on the de novo design and engineering of miniprotein therapeutics. We combine cutting-edge computational protein design and artificial intelligence with synthetic biology and laboratory robotics to accelerate the creation of life-changing medicines. Our common goal is to markedly improve human health and well-being. Our environment is rigorous and collaborative, bringing together passionate individuals who are making an impact. We inspire creativity by embracing an open culture that fosters initiative, teamwork, and excellence.

Overview AI Proteins is seeking a scientist with mass spectrometry hands-on experience to lead the analytical efforts for the characterization of miniproteins and bioconjugates. This role offers the opportunity to own and shape the company’s mass spectrometry strategy, from initial reliance on contract research organizations (CROs) to building a best-in-class internal analytical function with the right instrumentation, workflows, and talent to meet evolving program needs. The ideal candidate will collaborate across interdisciplinary teams, including protein engineering and manufacturing.

Responsibilities

Develop and manage analytical tools, focusing on mass spectrometry and chromatography-based techniques to characterize unknown impurities and degradation products derived from miniprotein manufacturing.

Design, perform and interpret LC-MS, LC/MS/MS and LC-QTOF/MS workflows to characterize miniprotein conjugates (including metal loading), ADCs, drug substances, and intermediates.

Develop workflows and analysis of LC/MS and MS-based quantitation methods for miniproteins in complex matrices to support preclinical pharmacokinetic studies in collaboration with pharmacology and DMPK teams.

Stay at the forefront of technological advancements in mass spectrometry and other analytical technologies, integrating innovative solutions to enhance current workflows.

Purchase, set-up, and maintain relevant equipment to build internal mass spectrometry capabilities based on company needs.

Manage outsourced analytical projects with CROs, ensuring scientific quality, appropriate study design, and timely delivery of actionable data.

Prepare internal reports, presentations, protocols and technical documents for internal use and conferences.

Participate in internal team meetings by actively engaging in scientific and technical discussions.

Qualifications

Ph.D., M.S., or B.S. in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, or related field with relevant experience in mass spectrometry, bioconjugation, or chemical biology. Strong track record of success and high technical aptitude in the development of analytical assays powered by mass spectrometry.

For Ph.D. candidates: minimum of 1+ year of post-doctoral or industry experience in the development of mass spectrometry workflows.

For M.S. candidates: minimum of 4+ years of experience in the development of mass spectrometry assays within a biopharmaceutical setting.

For B.S. candidates: minimum of 6+ years of hands-on experience in biopharmaceutical settings.

Expertise in characterization and determination of post-translational modification in recombinant proteins using LC/MS and LC/MS/MS.

Experience in characterization of bioconjugates, including metal-containing conjugates or peptide-toxin conjugates using LC/MS, LC-QTOF/MS and ICP/MS.

Demonstrated experience supporting bioanalytical studies, including preclinical pharmacokinetic and matrix stability analyses.

Experience managing relationships with CROs is highly desirable.

Familiarity with GMP, GLP, and regulatory guidelines for biologic product development (preferable but not required).

Proven ability to design and execute experiments, analyze complex data, and troubleshoot bioconjugation protocols.

Strong communication and teamwork skills in a cross-functional environment.

Talented problem solver: strategic, self-directed, scientifically rigorous, and capable of managing and implementing complex technical projects.

Highly energetic: adaptable and proactive, able to thrive in dynamic settings, respond to change, and drive progress with creativity and determination.
