Overview
FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Chair, Materials Science and Engineering Department The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is a joint college of engineering for Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU). The inaugural Chair will provide visionary, strategic, and collaborative leadership to build and grow the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), including defining MSE’s vision, recruiting faculty, developing academic programs, and training the next generation of materials scientists and engineers. The department currently offers graduate programs and is positioned for future expansion, potentially including undergraduate offerings as strategic priorities evolve. The MSE Department is located in the Interdisciplinary Research and Commercialization Building (IRCB), a state-of-the-art facility that opened in March 2025 and supports interdisciplinary discovery and collaboration. Building C will further expand research and instructional space to accommodate new faculty and interdisciplinary research teams. Responsibilities
Lead the rapid establishment and growth of the MSE department within the joint college structure. Develop curricula, recruit and onboard faculty, support faculty development, and grow research expenditures and graduate production. Advocate for the department within the College and across both universities, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and strategic priorities. Build synergistic collaborations across administrative boundaries to leverage two-campus integration and resources. Represent the department in shaping its identity, culture, and trajectory; work with the Dean and College leadership to advance interdisciplinary programs and research initiatives. Qualifications
Visionary and strategic leader with a clear ability to build and grow academic and research programs. Strong record of scholarly achievement and a research-active profile; credentials appropriate for appointment as a full professor. Exceptional candidates with equivalent qualifications may be considered. Experience navigating a joint college structure where faculty hold tenure at either FAMU or FSU and maintain joint appointments. Ability to foster collaboration across two institutions and to implement customized initiatives and programs that advance department and college goals. Additional context
