Job Description
Summary:
The Operating Room Circulating RN manages all the necessary care inside the surgery room, assisting the team in maintaining and creating a comfortable, safe environment for the patient and observing the team from a wide perspective. He or she must ensure all surgical team members perform in a unified effort. The Operating Room Circulating RN is responsible for the coordination, delivery, and documentation of patient care during the intra-operative phase of care. The nursing role during this phase focuses on providing safe quality patient care through adherence to policies and procedures, and standards of practice for perioperative nursing. He/she will also monitor compliance to established best practice standards, policies, and procedures during the entire patient surgical experience.
Monday through Friday, occasional weekends with call
Qualifications:
- Education/Certification: Graduate fron an accredited school of nursing. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Wisconsin required. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification required. CNOR certification preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of Operating room experience preferred. PeriOperative101 required for applicants with no experience.
- Equipment/Technology: Basic computer skills required
- Language/Communication: Must have the ability to effectively read, write, and speak English.
- Mathematical Skills: Must be able to calculate medication doses and other medication-related calculations.
- Mental Capabilities: Ability to work in a fast based environment. Can adapt to rapidly changing workloads due to changes in the surgery census. Can frequently and consistently make sound judgements.
- Interpersonal Skills: Works well in a multidisciplinary setting.
- Performance: Can work well under pressure and meet multiple and competing deadlines.
Responsibilities include:
- Performs the perioperative nursing role to include preoperative assessment of the patient, nursing care plan formulation, operative care plan implementation, and postoperative evaluation of the patient’s response/outcome. Also evaluates the effectiveness and appropriateness of nursing care provided with documentation of such.
- Demonstrates understanding and utilization of principles of asepsis in all duties.
- Assists in the setting up and performance of cases by opening of sterile packs, instruments, and supplies according to sterile technique.
- Assists in the setting up the procedure/operating room by gathering of equipment and supplies needed for each procedure.
- Prepares each patient for surgery by:
- Positioning the patient in the appropriate position.
- Preparing the patient’s operative site.
- Confirming the procedure and site according to the surgical consent.
- Helping move the patient to and from the operating table.
- Assists anesthesia personnel with the intubation/extubation of patients, the monitoring of fluid volume balance, the administration of blood/blood products, and the thermo-regulation of the patient.
- Performs surgical counts (sponges, sharps, and instruments) and documents nursing care in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Handles specimens according to proper procedure.
- Assists in the clean-up of the operating room following surgery, including proper disposal of used supplies and sharps.
- Assumes responsibility for intra-operative patient safety related to positioning activities, the use of equipment, and the use of chemicals and solutions.
- Is responsible for complete and thorough performance of assigned tasks, addressing specific needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients as necessary.
- Acts as the nursing advocate for the patient, upholding the patient’s rights. Collaborates with other professional team members.
- Monitors the patient’s level of consciousness, electrocardiogram, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation during local anesthetic procedures.
- Uses supplies conservatively and efficiently.
- Performs infection control activities to include observation of the surgical team during procedures, taking corrective actions as needed to maintain aseptic technique. Provides a surgically clean environment for patient care. Ensures the sterility of supplies and instrumentation used during operative procedures.
- Adheres to and policies, procedures at Osceola Medical Center and participates in Performance Improvement activities.
- Performs on call duties for surgeries after duty hours and weekends on a rotating basis.
- Is knowledgeable of policies and procedures of the department and facility.
- Maintains professional competency through appropriate continuing education.
- Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein, or as assigned by the Surgery Shift Supervisor, Surgical Services Director.
- Cover in Pre-op/PACU areas as needed.
