Software Development Manager, AWS Transactional Services

As AWS continues to grow to serve more customers and support more products, the foundational technologies of AWS also need to evolve to support larger scales and new use cases. The AWS Transactional Services team in Seattle builds distributed systems and backend technologies that offer innovative solutions to this growth, providing services and APIs to other AWS teams. Our customers include a wide range of AWS foundational teams – from S3, Kinesis, SNS, and DynamoDB – each seeking technology solutions to achieve their goals.
As a Software Development Manager, you will join the team that builds Journal Data Plane services and automations at scale. You will lead a team of software developers solving novel technical challenges, working closely with tenured Principal Engineers and Senior Software Engineers on a daily basis.
Responsibilities
Own the delivery of software development projects end-to-end.
Define your team's roadmap and manage ongoing projects, keeping customers informed, updating senior management, and representing the team to their dependencies.
Work with the engineers in your team to invent, design, and develop highly available and scalable distributed systems and database technologies.
Work with your team, peers, senior management, and senior engineers to implement best practices in software development and operational processes.
Develop and grow the members of your team, including mentoring others.
Keep up to date with new technologies used in the field and by our customers, to stay current in our rapidly changing environment.
Basic Qualifications
3+ years of engineering team management experience
7+ years of working directly within engineering teams
3+ years of designing or architecting new and existing systems (design patterns, reliability, and scaling)
8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services
Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements and describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring, coaching, and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills and effectiveness

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
