Applied Scientist II and Senior Applied Scientist (Multiple Positions) – Create ML Team, Office Product Group

Join us as we grow the M365 Copilot Hub Create ML team, where we are revolutionizing visual creation within the M365 Copilot App, Microsoft Designer, and Photos. Located in Mountain View, California and Redmond, WA, we are pushing the limits of machine learning to help information workers create the world’s best designs.
As an Applied Scientist II or Senior Applied Scientist on the Create ML team, you will work in an exciting and fast‑paced environment, collaborating closely with teams across the company, including Microsoft Research and various product groups. You will develop cutting‑edge visual creation models and build a top‑tier visual creation experience in M365 Copilot App, driving innovation and creating modern, inclusive, and intelligent design experiences used by millions worldwide.
Responsibilities
You will work on machine learning (ML) projects across various domains such as natural language processing (NLP), vision, and harness LLMs, VLMs, and diffusion models to deliver visual AI solutions for our customers.
You will develop algorithms and techniques leveraging text and images to analyze and transform content into solutions that have the potential to transform people’s lives.
You will work with engineering partner teams on model integration, flight, and maintenance.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field
OR equivalent experience
2+ years of experience demonstrating proficiency in Python and relevant Machine Learning (ML) libraries (e.g., PyTorch)
2+ years of experience with LLM/VLM/diffusion models, including but not limited to: GPT, Deepseek‑R1, Stable diffusion, Phi‑V, Qwen
Experience shipping applied research to production, including a track record of combining coding skills with advanced expertise in AI model development
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

Experience in coding and design, specifically in the development of AI models for scaled production services
Experience demonstrating problem‑solving and data analysis skills, withexpertisein developing or applying predictive analytics, statistical modelling, data mining, or machine learning algorithms
Experience demonstrating leadership skills to influence others, with the ability to understand team dynamics, retain, attract, and develop team members
Experience demonstrating a growth mindset, customer obsession, and inclusion
Demonstrated passion for product impact, including state‑of‑the‑art tools, technologies, and methods being used in the research community and product groups
Salary Applied Sciences IC3 – U.S. base pay range: $100,600 – $199,000 per year.
In the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area: $131,400 – $215,400 per year. Applied Sciences IC4 – U.S. base pay range: $119,800 – $234,700 per year.
In the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area: $158,400 – $258,000 per year. Certain roles may be eligible for additional benefits and other compensation.
