Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The College of Arts and Sciences is the academic heart of the UNC experience, comprising 43 departments and numerous programs. The School of Civic Life and Leadership (SCiLL) focuses on civic and leadership education, and this role supports its human resources needs.

Position Summary This time‑limited position provides HR consultation and guidance to school leadership, faculty and staff, ensuring compliance with university HR policies and supporting talent strategy and succession planning. Responsibilities include processing EHRA and non‑faculty hires, managing re‑appointments, benefits, payroll coordination, and handling sensitive personnel matters.

Responsibilities

Administer all EHRA and EHRA Non‑Faculty permanent and temporary hires, funding swaps, Annual Raise Process, reappointments, end of appointments, and related payroll activities.

Handle all leave of absence, benefits, recruitment, and promotion/tenure (APT) and post‑tenure review processes for faculty positions.

Oversee SHRA positions, graduate‑student hires, temporary/intermittent hires, and career banding.

Coordinate time‑management system, leave, and benefits for staff and graduate students.

Partner with leadership to understand talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning.

Provide guidance on personnel performance, disciplinary, and employee‑relation matters.

Manage the talent acquisition process, including recruitment, interviewing, and hiring.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and university regulations.

Use ConnectCarolina, PeopleAdmin, LawLogix I‑9, and InfoPorte to implement actions and address payroll issues.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements Bachelor’s degree and two years of progressively responsible professional HR management experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be from accredited institutions.

Excellent oral and written communication, sound business judgment, tact, and diplomacy.

Strong knowledge of governing policies for each employee category.

Ability to manage multiple competing deadlines with independence and accountability.

Passion for exceptional customer service, strong attention to detail, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to explain detailed and technical information, guidelines, rules, and regulations.

Working knowledge of MS Office (Word and Excel).

Sense of urgency, quick turnaround, and ownership of the HR professional role.

Initiative for learning and recognizing needed changes for improvement.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience

Demonstrated HR experience.

HR professional certifications (PHR/SPHR, SHRM‑CP/SCP, etc.).

Knowledge of PeopleSoft and InfoPorte.

Thorough knowledge of UNC Policies and Procedures for SHRA and EHRA positions.

Experience in higher education.

Experience handling visa management (H1B, J1, etc.).

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The role reports Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and completes annual Clery reporting training.
