Job Summary Assesses, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the clinical and operational functions of a nursing unit to ensure quality, cost‑effective health care is provided by an educated and competent team. Promotes a safe environment and performs all related job responsibilities in a safe manner. Maintains clinical and professional competency as appropriate to the age, developmental stages, and special needs of the patients served.
Essential Functions
Demonstrate and support a Professional Practice model that enables collaboration with interdisciplinary partners to achieve high quality patient outcomes.
Ensure unit operations and employees comply with the Nursing Practice Act, regulatory agency standards, and facility policies.
Act as a team member to accomplish the unit’s goals and organizational objectives, upholding quality management and patient care standards.
Recruit, retain, orient, educate, credential, and develop staff through performance evaluation and mutual goal setting.
Delegate effectively by promoting shared governance and research to improve clinical outcomes.
Perform nursing care, assist with treatments and procedures, and administer medications as needed.
Provide and assess the effectiveness of patient and family education.
Participate in performance improvement activities to enhance quality of nursing care and cost effectiveness.
Assist in developing policies, procedures, and standards reflective of evidence‑based practice.
Promote shared accountability for professional practice.
Allocate resources to meet unit needs; oversee the budget and maintain a cost‑effective environment.
Physical Requirements Walking, standing, sitting, lifting (up to 35 lb), reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling. Requires fluent English, intact vision, hearing, smell, touch, finger dexterity, critical thinking, and quick response to patient and unit changes.
Education, Experience & Certifications • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing, current RN licensure in the applicable state.
• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred; if BSN, a master’s degree from a health‑related program or MBA acceptable.
• Previous management experience preferred. BLS required. Professional certification in clinical or leadership within 1 year of eligibility.
• Enrollment in an MSN program within 1 year of hire and graduation within 5 years of hire if not already holding MSN.
