Job Summary The Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney supports Midmark’s Legal Department in managing and protecting the company’s intellectual property portfolio. This role collaborates closely with the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel to support legal initiatives in the medical device industry. The position is on‑site, four days per week at our Cincinnati, OH location. Responsibilities include conducting IP assessments, managing patent and trademark portfolios, advising on IP risks, and supporting strategic innovation initiatives. The role performs work under general supervision.
Essential Duties
Draft, file, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in collaboration with outside counsel
Conduct patentability, freedom‑to‑operate, and infringement analyses to support product development and commercialization
Manage and maintain the company’s IP portfolio, including patents, trademarks, and trade secrets
Support internal invention disclosure processes and participate in innovation reviews
Coordinate with engineering, R&D, and marketing teams to identify and protect new intellectual property
Advise on licensing, joint development agreements, and third‑party IP matters
Review contracts, NDAs, and other legal documents for IP‑related risks and compliance
Support IP litigation, oppositions, and enforcement matters as needed
Stay current on changes in IP law and educate internal teams on best practices
Secondary Duties
Assist with general corporate legal work, including due diligence and compliance matters
Support cross‑functional legal initiatives and departmental process improvements
Education & Experience Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). 1 to 4 years of experience in intellectual property law within a law firm or in‑house legal department, preferably in the medical device or life sciences sector, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Solid working knowledge of U.S. and international patent and trademark law
Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
Effective communication and interpersonal skills
Comprehensive attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
Experience with IP docketing systems and legal document management tools
Working knowledge of product development processes in regulated industries
