Job Overview
Fairview Health Services is seeking a
Laboratory Care Technician (LCT)
at
M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center-West Bank . The position is full‑time, 8‑hour evening shift (2:45 pm to 11:15 pm), with a schedule of 3 out of 6 weekends. This role is eligible for a retention bonus of up to $1,000, paid out every six months, pro‑rated based on FTE.
The Acute Laboratories perform clinical hematology, chemistry, blood gas, coagulation, urinalysis, transfusion medicine, and blood collection and processing. The laboratory serves a wide range of pediatric and adult patients and operates 24/7. The LCT will collect specimens at various M Health Fairview or outreach locations, handle safe and secure specimen transport, and provide point‑of‑care testing as needed.
Responsibilities
Follow established guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOP) to obtain biological specimens.
Perform phlebotomy at various sites and communicate special handling needs of specimens.
Use appropriate communication skills to meet patient, family, and customer needs.
Demonstrate proficiency with point‑of‑care testing and/or waived testing.
May perform EKGs and train others in phlebotomy skills.
Ensure specimens are acceptable for testing, properly labeled, and transport them under proper conditions.
Process specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
Perform daily quality control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance.
Monitor inventory, order, and restock supplies.
Provide daily results in LIS/HIS, report over the phone, and support quality assurance program.
Maintain a safe work environment, adhere to safety protocols and infection control guidelines, and respond appropriately to emergent situations.
Accurately enter orders and collection information into LIS and subsystems, monitor computer logs for incomplete work, and schedule tests/procedures.
Support lab operations with additional computer skills as needed.
Required Qualifications
Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program, or three months of full‑time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience, or enrollment in an MLT or MLS program with completion of a phlebotomy course.
At least 18 years of age.
Successful customer service experience in a diverse cultural setting.
Ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
Independent judgment and manual dexterity.
Competent and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
