Position Summary Trout Unlimited (TU), the nation’s leading coldwater conservation organization, seeks a passionate and strategic Director of Annual Giving and Campaigns to grow our community of supporters and strengthen the movement to care for and recover America’s rivers and streams and their trout and salmon populations. This role leads TU’s annual giving and membership programs, with a focus on engaging current members, welcoming new ones, and ensuring that our base of support continues to grow in both size and impact. The director will develop and define TU’s member journeys to create strategies aligned with our brand that elevate the experience of its members. Specific focus will be given to creating and implementing a comprehensive plan that increases revenue from some of our most loyal and generous donors at the $1,000 to $10,000 level through ongoing identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and advancement of these members. The director will oversee multi-channel fundraising campaigns, including direct mail, email, earned media, and digital engagement, while managing membership revenue and driving innovation in donor and member experience. The director will supervise two team members and work with colleagues across the organization to create compelling messages and campaigns that inspire people to join TU, renew their support, and deepen their commitment to coldwater conservation.
Key Responsibilities
Grow Annual Giving & Membership
Lead the strategy for annual giving and membership to increase unrestricted revenue and broaden TU’s community of supporters.
Work with digital marketing and communications teams to recommend and collaborate on broader communications strategies that will attract new members, as well as maintain and upgrade existing members.
Design and execute integrated campaigns through direct mail, email, earned media, and digital platforms to inspire giving and engagement.
Innovate around donor and member experience to strengthen loyalty, retention, and lifetime value.
Develop and manage fundraising and engagement campaigns that highlight TU’s conservation priorities and impact.
Work closely with digital marketing and development teams to create smooth pipeline transitions from lead to prospect to regular membership to annual giving to major donor programs, addressing digital systems, CRM processes, and solicitation strategies.
Collaborate with digital marketing, communications and conservation staff to create compelling, consistent storytelling across all channels.
Ensure campaign messages reflect TU’s values of community, stewardship, and conservation.
Partner with IT and digital teams to ensure accurate tracking of membership activities and campaign performance. Analyze member engagement trends and provide actionable insights to inform strategy, enhance retention, and support revenue growth.
Supervise, mentor, and support two direct reports responsible for campaign execution and membership revenue.
Partner with colleagues across Development, Communications & Brand, and grassroots leadership to align campaigns with organizational priorities.
Manage budget delivery, annual forecasting and reforecasting processes and monitor performance metrics to ensure strong results and return on investment, adjusting accordingly.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or CFRE a plus.
7+ years of experience in annual giving, membership, direct mail marketing, or multi-channel fundraising.
Proficiency tracking and managing data, including list pulls, excludes, and leveraging data insights within a CRM system (NetForum, RaisersEdge, Blackbaud, etc.).
Demonstrated success growing unrestricted revenue and building donor or member communities.
Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
Deep knowledge of direct mail and digital fundraising best practices.
Strong leadership, project management, and organizational skills.
Excellent writing, storytelling, and communication abilities.
