Overview Carver County is looking for energetic candidates with excellent customer service skills to staff our jail. Under the direction of the Detention Sergeant, the Detention Deputy maintains security and safety within the jail by supervising activities of inmates.

The Carver County Jail is a 24/7/365 operation. Candidates must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays, and be adaptive to shift work. Applicants may be called upon outside of regular shift hours to respond to extreme emergency events.

The full wage range for this position is $27.63 - $41.45. Starting rate of pay for entry level candidates is $30.68 per hour. Candidates with corrections/detention experience will be given consideration for an increased starting rate of pay.

Detention Deputies are paid a weekend differential of $1.00 per hour for each hour worked from 00:00 Saturday through 23:59 on Sunday. A Detention Deputy also working a majority of hours between 3:00 PM and 6:00 AM will be paid a shift/night differential of $1.25 per hour. Both differentials are in addition to the base wage.

1st interviews will be held in person Wednesday, November 19 at the Chaska Justice Center.

Responsibilities

Supervise inmates by enforcing jail rules and carrying out procedures as defined by office and divisional policies. This may include supervising inmates in their daily activities, maintaining order, monitoring behavior, responding to and attempting to resolve inmate concerns or conflicts, responding to emergencies, monitoring inmate mail and phone calls, maintaining necessary logs and reports, and performing housekeeping and sanitation practices as necessary to ensure a safe facility.

Book and release inmates by performing booking functions such as creating inmate files, fingerprinting, photographing, arranging for an interpreter as needed, recording personal property and money, conducting inmate orientation, providing information, classifying inmates, and gathering necessary documents.

Maintain inmate records by entering inmate data into computer files and submitting to proper agencies, maintaining a detailed record of all inmate activity, account purchases and deposits, medical needs, reports, and other documents to ensure that the inmate files are accurate.

Respond to emergency situations using necessary emergency equipment to ensure the safety of inmates and staff while exercising sound judgment.

Transport inmates to/from court, medical appointments, and other approved activities, maintaining security, control, and rules of conduct at all times.

Distribute medication and carry out medical treatment as prescribed and authorized while maintaining detailed records of such activity as dictated by policy.

Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED and three (3) years of cumulative education, internship, training, or work experience in a related public or customer service field.

Associate’s Degree and one (1) year of cumulative education, internship, training, or work experience in a related public or customer service field.

BA/BS in any field of study.

Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

The highest ranked candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be recommended for the scored oral examinations (interviews). Final selection for the position will include successful completion of oral interview(s), reference checks, background investigation including CJIS fingerprinting, pre-placement physical, and psychological evaluation.
