Pay Range Liberty Mutual Insurance provided pay range:
Base pay: $75,000.00/yr - $194,000.00/yr
Additional compensation may include commission and/or bonus earnings, based on factors set forth in the compensation plan.
Description We’re looking for a highly experienced underwriting professional to lead and grow a complex portfolio of Excess and Umbrella Liability business. As a Senior Underwriter, you’ll evaluate and underwrite high‑hazard risks, structure layered liability programs, and manage umbrella placements across diverse industries. You’ll work closely with brokers and agents to negotiate terms, drive profitable growth, and ensure underwriting discipline. The role also offers the opportunity to mentor junior team members and contribute to strategic portfolio management, making a direct impact on performance and market positioning.
Responsibilities
Manage portfolio of brokers/agents and clients, leveraging market presence and knowledge to develop and underwrite profitable business as a representative for Liberty.
Maintain a strong market presence, including established relationships with agents and brokers, and seek to strengthen and develop new ones.
Contribute ideas for product development and participate in development and execution, including team projects such as process and tool improvement.
Understand the work implications of relevant legislation and regulation.
Collaborate effectively across teams, stakeholders, and partners (e.g., UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in GRS North America). Mentor junior underwriters and new hires (not as a line manager).
Analyze department portfolio and make suggestions for development.
Recognize and communicate emerging trends of exposures within the line of business expertise.
Qualifications
Degree in Business or equivalent typically required.
A minimum of 2.5 years of progressive underwriting experience or related experience (typically 3 or more years).
CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred.
Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks, with competence across all phases of the underwriting process and proficiency in qualitative and quantitative tools.
Demonstrated comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues, capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows.
Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.
