Typical Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend hours will occasionally be needed at certain periods to support student lab work, field work, and lab management to meet the needs of the departments. Full-Time / Part-Time

The University of North Carolina Asheville invites applications for a Laboratory Manager in the Departments of Environmental Science and Physics & Astronomy. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for providing management of laboratory operations, demonstration collections and curricular field-work to ensure the proper function of the teaching and research instructional missions of the

and

Physics & Astronomy

departments. Support includes preparing lab and demonstration materials; maintaining teaching laboratories and inventory; ordering equipment and supplies; coordinating equipment maintenance, coordinating & facilitating travel for on- and off-campus curricular field work; and overseeing safe operation of equipment, field operations, and student safety training. The ability to plan and adapt effectively to changing instructional needs and safety awareness are critical components of the role. The Laboratory Manager communicates regularly with faculty, staff, and students and is encouraged to pursue relevant professional development to stay current with best practices in lab management and instructional support. Additional responsibilities may include opportunities to engage in department outreach and student mentorship. This position supports the learning outcomes of the departments as follows: Department of Environmental Science

Students can define a sustainable society. Students understand how lifestyle choices affect environmental sustainability. Students are able to articulate why it is necessary to have an environmentally sustainable society. Students will be able to describe how sustainability relates to their department concentration and give examples of sustainable actions related to that concentration. Department of Physics and Astronomy

Students can recall and explain fundamental concepts in their own words, define and frame problems, and interpret outcomes in broader scientific and societal contexts. Students can develop and apply strategies to solve idealized and real-world problems, refine their approaches based on results, and draw evidence-based conclusions. Students can use tools, software, coding, and data analysis techniques to investigate physical phenomena, and communicate results clearly in written, oral, and multimodal forms. Students can work effectively in teams, demonstrate professionalism and integrity, and communicate respectfully with people holding different perspectives and backgrounds. FLSA

FLSA Exempt Required Education/Experience/Skills

Master’s degree in Physics, Astronomy, Environmental Science, or a related scientific field is preferred. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years equivalent experience may also be considered. The successful candidate must be able to function professionally in a highly collaborative and increasingly dynamic organization. Valid driver’s license. Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

Master’s degree in Physics, Astronomy, Environmental Science, or a related scientific field. Teaching or supervisory experience. Previous experience with laboratory equipment, ordering lab supplies, and maintenance of laboratory operations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This position requires the ability to: communicate effectively and appropriately; instruct and assist students in the use of laboratory instruments and equipment; effectively prepare classroom, laboratory, and demonstration spaces for class needs; coordinate and participate in off-campus field work (safely operate a 15-passenger van); follow proper safety guidelines; efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Email, Word, use appropriate interpersonal skills and methods to guide individuals or groups to base decisions on the weighing of alternative actions and making decisions based on given or available information; exercise sound reasoning in decision making based on given or available information toward the achievement of the goals of the University; display clear understanding of university goals and services and link them to departmental objectives and services; display energy and initiative actions within the workplace in a timely fashion; meet work commitment and promises; demonstrate honesty and respect in the workplace; implement work procedures that facilitate a rapport with students and colleagues to be welcoming to all regardless of differences; understand and anticipate “customer” needs to effectively execute essential functions of the position.
