Overview
Job Title: Landfill/Heavy Equipment Operator
Location: Winter Haven, FL 33880
Duration: 6+ months
Pay Rate: $17/hr. on w2 without benefits
Shift Timing: 1st Shift: 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. (Monday to Friday)
Notes: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment.
Job Description
- Responsible for the safe, efficient operation of a wide range of heavy equipment used in processing, compacting, and covering solid waste at the landfill.
- Ensures compliance with environmental and safety regulations while maintaining site functionality, appearance, and performance standards.
Role & Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment including compactors, dozers, graders, loaders, articulated trucks, and excavators to process and compact solid waste.
- Perform landfill operations in accordance with state and local environmental regulations (FDEP Chapter 62-701).
- Construct and maintain berms, drainage systems, haul roads, and slopes to ensure environmental compliance and prevent stormwater intrusion.
- Apply and maintain daily/intermediate cover using soil or alternative materials (tarps, foams, etc.) to minimize environmental and safety risks.
- Work in coordination with spotters and environmental compliance staff to ensure safe and compliant operations.
- Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections, light maintenance, and recordkeeping on assigned equipment.
- Interpret and implement GPS Machine Control and Computerized Earthmoving Systems for grading and compaction accuracy.
Required Skills
- Proficient in operation and maintenance of landfill heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, waste classifications, and Subtitle D regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret survey data, maps, and machine control information.
- Skilled in basic mathematics and recordkeeping.
- Ability to recognize hazardous or prohibited wastes.
- Strong physical endurance; able to work in all weather and terrain conditions.
- Effective communication, teamwork, and independent decision-making skills.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years' experience operating and maintaining landfill or similar heavy equipment.
- Valid Driver's License (must obtain Florida Driver's License upon employment).
- Ability to obtain University of Florida TREEO Center Landfill Certification within 12 months of hire (70% minimum passing score; continuing education required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in private waste industry operations (landfills, transfer stations, recycling, or collections).
- Experience operating a Claw Truck and/or Roll-Off Truck.
- Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred.
