We are hiring a

Consumer Lending Underwriting Manager

to lead and oversee the Underwriting Team, responsible for training, development, motivation, counseling, delegation, communication, and discipline of team members. This position will assist members and employees with loan‑related situations and escalations, and assist management in developing and implementing lending procedures and managing credit risks.

Business Hours Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Depending on business needs, flexible hours, occasional weekends, and after‑hours may be required.

Location Anadyr Hills, CA; hybrid‑remote schedule (2 days in office, 3 remote).

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

5+ years’ experience in the financial industry.

3+ years’ experience in consumer loan underwriting.

3+ years’ experience in management.

Experience with core banking and loan origination systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate’s degree or equivalent.

7+ years’ experience in the financial industry.

5+ years’ experience in banking within consumer lending.

3+ years’ experience in banking within consumer lending underwriting management.

Exposure to AI‑driven solutions and FinTech platforms.

Skills and Abilities

Proficient in all applicable MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.).

In‑depth knowledge of automated loan approval platforms using AI technology.

Demonstrated ability to motivate, coach, counsel and train team members.

In‑depth knowledge of all loan/deposit products required.

Ability to produce documents, spreadsheets, databases, etc. with Windows‑based software; computer systems and data entry preferred.

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Sound organizational skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a role model for CU SoCal leaders and staff by setting the example in managing for expected results.

Streamline the consumer loan underwriting process for efficiency. Increase instant approvals by use of AI systems and FinTech.

Work towards minimizing the approval of fraudulent and/or credit risk applications.

Review and analyze loan applications for accurate ratios, fraud screening, credit depth, pay history, and information to ensure quality and regulatory compliance.

Maintain working knowledge of lending regulations and recommend changes as needed to stay compliant.

Monitor rate trends within the industry and provide comparisons to stay competitive in the market.

Perform audits of individual underwriters; handle internal and external auditor questions and requests.

Provide guidance to underwriters to ensure quality underwriting decisions are consistent and appropriate products are cross‑sold based on eligibility and member qualification.

Responsible for hiring, training, counseling, motivating, and disciplining; determining individual goals based on CU SoCal’s strategic plan, and tracking, monitoring and coaching for performance.

Write individual performance reviews, conduct monthly 1:1s, drive continuous focus and improvement.

Foster team engagement by encouraging a positive work culture that aligns with our organization’s brand, mission and core values.

Resolve member escalations, complaints and concerns timely and positively.

Develop system reports and analytics to assist in monitoring loan portfolio and team performance.

Analyze reasons for charged‑off loans and recommend guideline changes to minimize losses.

Provide primary support to retail teams related to lending policy, guidelines and product criteria.

Complete understanding and active application of the Exceptional Experience Guide expectations.

Must be able and available to work a hybrid schedule, as needed.

Additional duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

Compensation Pay Scale: Min $77,400 / Mid $99,736 / Max $118,976 per year. Actual compensation will be based on geographical location, work experience, education and/or skill level.
