Description Community professionals who provide culturally appropriate, social and emotional support to pregnant women throughout the prenatal period, labor and delivery, as well as the postpartum period. These doulas are trained to focus on the needs of specific communities that historically have had worse birth outcomes. They often share the same background, culture and language as their clients. Community-based doula programs conduct home visits and offer a wider array of services and referrals for people who need more support. The relationship that develops during home visits can be particularly helpful for clients looking to expand their social support network. These doulas are trained to address all the needs of their clients, including referrals to food pantries, housing programs and sources for free diapers.
Qualifications
Graduate of 4 yr. College in Social Work, Psychology or related field and/or Doula Training
1+ years in childbirth education, labor support, or breastfeeding education and support
Establishes a collaborative relationship with client and nursing team, where roles and responsibilities are clearly delineated and agreed upon. Practices culturally competent, evidence-based medicine, and adjusts to the needs of the patient.
Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
Bi-lingual proficient in two or more Languages. Haitian Creole desirable. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and staff.
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

Certifications and Physical Requirements
DONA International certification preferred or obtain within six months from hire
Certified Lactation Counselor certification preferred
