Job Description
Toole Design Group in Detroit, MI is looking to hire an experienced and talented full‑time Principal Civil Engineer.
Experience successfully managing a diverse team to deliver highway or roadway projects from preliminary through final design, on time and on budget, while coordinating with clients and mentoring staff is essential.
The role involves leading complex roadways and streetscapes in urban settings and signature trail projects that enhance the natural environment.
This Principal Civil Engineer position earns a competitive salary and great benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, a health savings account (HSA), and a flexible spending account (FSA).
All staff receive 8 holidays and at least 16 days of PTO.
Transportation incentives for biking, walking, or transit use are also provided.

A Day in the Life of a Principal Civil Engineer As a Principal Engineer, you will brainstorm and implement creative solutions for challenging projects.
You will lead, manage, design, and implement roadway, streetscape, and active transportation projects that positively affect communities.
Your responsibilities include:
Managing multidisciplinary teams and client relationships from concept to construction.
Preparing feasibility studies, concept plans, and construction documents for innovative projects across the Midwestern and North American offices.
Participating in business development across the region.
Providing knowledge on stakeholder and public outreach and ensuring projects meet accessibility and sustainability goals.
Salary Range We are targeting a range of $140,000‑$161,000 for this position.
Candidates with exceptional qualifications may fall into a higher pay range.
Work Schedule This position will initially be remote with a plan to transition to a hybrid schedule.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the Ann Arbor and Detroit areas.
Client and site visits, as well as quarterly meetings with the Michigan team, are required.
Toole Design will provide all necessary equipment for working from home.

Requirements Qualifications of a Principal Civil Engineer:
Professional Engineering license in Michigan (other Midwest states a plus).
Bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering.
Proficiency in MicroStation (including OpenRoads) or AutoCAD (including Civil 3D).
Additional Qualifications (Preferred)
At least 15 years of engineering experience developing construction documents and/or public agency construction administration.
At least 5 years serving in a project and/or design management role.
Broad knowledge in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling, and design of accessible public spaces.
Proven track record delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget.
Experience preparing transportation and local agency permit documents.
Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating utility and right‑of‑way impacts, street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layouts.
Interest in multimodal and active transportation design.
Knowledge of project performance metrics and monitoring strategies.
Business development experience, including networking at public events and industry organizations (e.g. ACEC, ITE, ASHE, ASCE).
