Title: Medical Lab Scientist II

Responsibilities

Evaluates specimens for quality and pre‑analytical errors.

Verifies results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability.

Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.

Receives general guidance and direction, typically on moderately complex procedures only.

Has knowledge of other areas in the laboratory and how they are related.

Works semi‑autonomously to accomplish tasks assigned.

Verifies instrument performance standards including linearity, reportable range and method comparisons.

Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.

Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.

Assists with inventory management.

Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver.

Evaluates accuracy of results considering all phases of testing to include pre‑analytical, analytical and post‑analytical sources of error.

Reports work activities, instrument issues, supply issues and pending work at shift change to the oncoming MLS.

Responds to work‑related technical inquiries.

Assists in the training of new team members and students.

Maintains adherence to policies, ADA, FMLA and other standards.

Performs specimen collection, receiving and processing as required.

Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.

Maintains current job knowledge to effectively instruct students or other personnel.

Follows established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.

Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.

Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital and departmental matters at all times.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Associate’s degree plus two years of directly related experience may substitute.

Successful completion of an approved clinical laboratory training internship.

Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist certified in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.

National Certification such as ASCP, AAB or AMT preferred.

Three (2) years minimum experience. Department‑specific competencies may be required.
