The Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) uses oncology-specific clinical knowledge to offer individualized guidance to patients, families, and caregivers, fostering independence throughout the complex cancer journey. Within the nursing process, the ONN assesses patient needs, provides education and resources, and facilitates appropriate and timely quality health and psychosocial care across all phases of the cancer continuum.

This is a 32‑hour per week position located in Boston and surrounding communities.

Responsibilities

Participate in day‑to‑day operations of the program, including patient education and call triage.

Participate in program evaluation and development of strategic goals aligned with DFCI’s mission.

Support the QA/QI projects for the program and assist with research activities.

Provide expert clinical care through evidence‑based practice, partnering with patients, families, and colleagues.

Deliver individualized care, considering functional status, cultural background, health literacy, psychosocial, reproductive/fertility, and spiritual needs.

Facilitate smooth transition of patients from active treatment into survivorship, chronic cancer management, or end‑of‑life care.

Assist patients with advanced directives, palliative care, and end‑of‑life concerns, using an ethical, non‑judgmental framework.

Act as a liaison between patients, families, caregivers, and providers to optimize outcomes.

Advocate for patient‑centered care, promoting shared decision‑making and goal alignment.

Provide psychosocial support and facilitate appropriate referrals for patients and families.

Report on navigation program metrics and outcomes in collaboration with administration.

Serve as the primary nursing contact for care delivered within the physician practice setting.

Engage in collaborative decision‑making, utilizing data and collective expertise.

Manage patient care across the continuum, including new patient calls and necessary referrals.

Maintain compliance with regulatory agency standards and ensure patient safety.

Apply evidence‑based nursing practice, consistent with institutional policies and standards.

Adhere to the ANA Code of Ethics and professional nursing practice standards.

Qualifications

Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or State of New Hampshire.

Baccalaureate degree in nursing strongly preferred; an associate degree acceptable if a BSN is completed within four years.

Minimum of one year recent RN experience; ambulatory and/or oncology experience preferred.

Professional nursing certification preferred (e.g., OCN, BMTCN, CPHON, AOCNP, CRNI, RN‑BC).

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) accepted as minimum.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Strong critical thinking, communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills with independent decision‑making.

Pay Transparency Statement For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Our Nurse Steps 1 – 21 rates range from $42.00 – $105.00 per hour. Pay is determined by business needs, market conditions, and candidate experience and qualifications.
