Job Description
Perform special duties as assigned. Stand‑by for “call in” seasonal work to supplement advance storm preparation and snow removal activities.
How You Will Contribute
Emergency Operations: Assist and support operations for clearing snow and ice from roadways, applying abrasives and chemicals on road surfaces. May also be called in to respond during other types of weather emergencies.
Manual Labor: Perform heavy manual labor such as installing tire chains, plow, blades, and performing debris removal.
Perform duties as assigned: Carry out tasks, activities, and/or projects as directed.
Preventative Maintenance: Maintain equipment used to clear roadways during inclement weather events.
What Will Make You Successful
Ability to operate medium and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, front‑end loaders, motor graders, backhoe, skid steerer, and tractors.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Minimum Qualifications
Perform heavy manual labor that includes standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs.
Work during day or night shifts to support emergency operations.
Possess a CDL with a DOT medical card and maintain it; comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Use safety shoes.
Operate medium and heavy equipment such as dump trucks, tractors, front‑end loaders, and motor graders.
Hold a valid Driver’s License.
Additional Considerations
Training, experience, or education in Emergency Operation, Snow Removal, or a related field is desired.
Perform preventative maintenance on diverse equipment.
Perform snow removal operations using single/tandem axle/truck, motor grader, backhoe, tractor, front‑end loader, etc.
Work 12‑hour shifts, night, and/or day as needed.
Work outside normal business hours in emergencies, inclement weather, and hazardous traffic conditions.
Physical Requirements Physical strength, endurance, and the ability to perform manual labor in potentially hazardous environments.
VDOT Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct VDOT employees must abide by VDOT’s Code of Ethics and the Commonwealth’s Standards of Conduct.
