Position Summary
The team at Sequoia Humane Society works together to provide compassionate care and meaningful second chances to animals in need. The Receptionist supports this mission by ensuring daily operations run smoothly, delivering exceptional service to animals, visitors, and the community, and upholding the highest standards of animal welfare, safety, and teamwork. This position contributes directly to maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming environment that reflects our values of kindness, integrity, and accountability.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the humane care and handling of all animals in accordance with SHS policies and standards.
- Ensure work areas, kennels, and public spaces are maintained in a clean and orderly condition.
- Assist with adoptions, intakes, and transfers, providing accurate information and empathetic communication.
- Maintain and update records in Animal Tracking System and other systems promptly and accurately.
- Promote a positive experience for visitors, volunteers, and coworkers through teamwork and professionalism.
- Follow all safety and infection-control protocols to protect animals, staff, and the public.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and organizational initiatives to support continuous improvement.
- Uphold the mission and values of Sequoia Humane Society in all duties and interactions.
- Perform additional responsibilities or special projects as assigned by the Shelter Manager or Executive Director.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Genuine compassion for animals and commitment to their welfare.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a friendly, professional demeanor.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and handle interactions with the public respectfully.
- Basic computer literacy and willingness to learn systems such as ShelterLuv.
- Prior experience in customer service, reception, or administrative support is a plus.
- Reliable attendance and a positive attitude are essential.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, emotionally dynamic environment.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, or ShelterLuv a plus.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if applicable).
- Comfortable handling animals.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with potential exposure to allergens, loud noises, and cleaning chemicals.
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and flexible hours as required.
