LEGAL SECRETARY
California Department of Social Services – Los Angeles County
Base pay range: $4,371.00 – $5,473.00 (A) and $4,591.00 – $5,748.00 (B). Minimum salary applies to new hires. Hybrid telework.
Permanent, full‑time position.
Job Description and Duties
The Legal Secretary independently and effectively supports two to four attorneys, including senior level staff. Responsibilities include:
- Type, edit, and format legal correspondence, petitions, briefs, legal opinions, pleadings, motions, testimonials, and depositions.
- Proofread and prepare form letters, files, and e‑files.
- Serve legal pleadings in multiple jurisdictions (State, Federal, Appellate).
- Maintain attorneys’ calendars; schedule meetings and appointments, and resolve scheduling conflicts.
- Make travel arrangements and prepare travel expense claims.
- Assume special projects for attorneys on complex cases.
- Analyze and apply rules, regulations, statutes, and laws related to legal procedures for typing, processing, and serving documents.
- Work independently and collaboratively with other Legal Secretaries and Senior Legal Typists under the supervision of a Legal Support Supervisor I.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combined education, training, and experience.
- At least 2 years of experience in a legal secretarial or similar support role.
- Typing speed of at least 45 wpm with a current typing certificate issued within the last four years.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Excellent organization, time‑management, and ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and legal case‑management software.
- Background investigation clearance required prior to hiring.
