Description
Under direct supervision, performs routine and repetitive tasks to maintain and beautify the parks, street medians, right-of-ways, facilities, athletic fields, and other Town properties. Examples of Duties • Operates commercial landscape and turf care equipment to include line trimmers, farm tractors, line trimmers, augers, tillers, tree spades, chippers, stump grinders, welders, chain saws, vehicles, and other light to heavy equipment. • Plants, cultivates, prunes, and removes trees, shrubs, flowers, etc.; fertilizes trees; selects and shapes trees; treats for insects; and waters and mulches trees. • Applies herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides under direct supervision of a licensed applicator; calibrates and maintains spraying systems; interprets labels; and keeps an inventory of chemicals and applications made. • Collects and disposes of trash in mowing areas, right-of-way areas, median areas, and Town buildings. • Installs and repairs irrigation systems; repairs leaks in control lines and piping; repairs controllers; checks irrigation systems on a continuous schedule for control of proper operations and performs preventative repairs of irrigation heads and valves. • Assembles, installs, maintains, and inspects playground and park equipment. • Performs vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance (including washing, checking, and servicing) all equipment and vehicles. • Required attendance while assisting in making preparations for special events, programs, athletic tournaments, and Town functions. • Prepares flower beds, works in trenches, and tight or enclosed areas; walks through brushes or entangled areas along creeks and other areas. • Works safely in close proximity to high speed vehicle traffic along medians. • Assists the Crew Leader, as directed, in directing and leading a work crew. • Adheres to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures. • Informs supervisor of potential hazards, problem areas, inquiries of the general public, and all work activities. • Prepares and maintains athletic fields during seasonal periods to include mowing, marking foul lines, installing, and removing goal posts; moving and inspecting bleachers and benches; and maintaining athletic equipment and supplies. • May work evenings and weekends, as needed. • Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications • A High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required. • Must have a valid state issued driver's license • One (1) year of commercial landscape, turf care, irrigation systems, equipment operation, and maintenance experience is required.
Physical Abilities • Must be able to talk, read, see, walk, and hear. • Must be able to perform strenuous physical activities to include, exerting up to 100 lbs. of pressure; lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy objects to include trimmers, mowers, tree limbs, and other equipment and supplies up to 100 lbs. several times a day; shoveling, crawling, bending, kneeling, and digging holes for several hours per day; climbing on and off equipment; and operating vibrating equipment. • Must be able to work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, in trenches, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable, and muddy terrain; under constantly noisy conditions; and work in adverse environmental conditions to include inclement weather such as rain, sleet, snow, heat, sun exposure; and hazardous conditions including fume odor, dust/mist, chemical, and exposure to insects, noxious plants, and snakes. Desired Qualifications • A valid Texas CDL "A" or "B" Driver's License is preferred. • Experience leading or directing a work group or team is preferred. Knowledge / Skills/ Abilities • General working knowledge of turf or lawn care. • Skills in operating small equipment such as line trimmer, chain saw, lawn mower, and hand tools. • Must have skills in using small power tools and equipment in a safe manner. • Must have good hand/foot/eye coordination to operate and repair equipment and vehicles; and follow oral and written directives.
