Description The City of Cypress is seeking an experienced and highly-motivated engineering professional to join its team as the Assistant City Engineer. The ideal candidate will be resourceful, collaborative, possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, and have the ability to mentor and develop subordinates.
The Assistant City Engineer receives general direction from the City Engineer and supervises professional and administrative support staff. This position is classified as exempt. Example of Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Evaluates maps and contract documents of proposed subdivisions for private development, including grading and improvement plans, for compliance with local regulations, codes and engineering standards; determines and recommends project development fees and bonding requirements for approval by the City Engineer. Administers the control, release and revision of engineering records including drawings, survey data, traffic and utility. Makes presentations to City staff, commissions, City Council and various public and private representatives. Assists in the preparation and presentation of the annual division budget, including capital improvement projects, overhead expenditures and division hourly labor distributions. Oversees and manages major capital project designs and construction, quality control, and budget. Reviews contractual invoices and recommends to City Engineer for approval. Acts in the absence of the City Engineer. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of civil engineering design and construction as applied to municipal street lighting and traffic signals, water and sewer systems, subdivisions, parcel maps, grading and plan checking; municipal government budgeting; engineering cost estimation practices; City, County and State Codes related to public works functions, including the Streets and Highways Code; laws and regulations governing land development, public projects and assessment districts.
Ability to: Plan, organize and supervise the work of assigned staff; prepare clear, concise, and informative correspondence and reports, including City Council and Traffic Commission reports, technical reports, engineering specifications and contract documents; develop long-range plans for public improvement projects and complete required applications and administrative reports.
Experience and Education: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and five years of professional municipal engineering experience, including two years in a supervisory capacity. Possession of a valid License as a Professional Engineer from the Board for Professional Engineers is also required. Supplemental Information
A resume is required. Vacation - 80 hours per year, up to a maximum of 160 hours (at 11 years of employment).
Sick Leave - Eight hours per month. There is unlimited accumulation, and the City has an annual payoff plan for unused sick leave, plus a payoff plan upon termination.

Holidays - 11 holidays per year plus one floating holiday.
Cafeteria Health Plan - $2,711 per month. Unused funds are available as cash-back.
Car Allowance - $200 per month.
Technology Allowance - $75 per month.
Retirement Health Savings (RHS) Plan - $185 per month contribution.
Tuition Reimbursement - Up to $1,500 per fiscal year.
Retirement - Cypress is a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The plan includes the following options: 2% at 55, one year highest compensation, 1959 survivor's benefit and post retirement survivor continuance. "Classic" members, hired before 6/30/10, pay 3% towards their PERS retirement contribution. "Classic" members, hired after 6/30/10, pay 6% towards their PERS retirement contribution. Cypress is not a member of the Social Security System.
For candidates not currently employed by a CalPERS Agency or exceeding six months of separation, retirement benefits offered will conform to the California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) after a January 1, 2013 date of hire. The formula is 2% @ 62.
