General Job Description

The Department Head, Transportation & Skilled Trades reports directly to the Dean, Transportation & Skilled Trades. This position works in cooperation with the Dean of Transportation & Skilled Trades on the leadership and day-to-day functioning of the divisional continuing education program/course offerings to attain the goal of providing quality educational experiences for students. The Department Head, Transportation & Skilled Trades provides quality learning experiences, facilitates the learning process, advises students, seeks professional development opportunities, contributes to the development of curriculum courses/programs and interacts with community/industry members. ** MINIMUM COMPENSATION BEGINS AT $60,240; ADDITIONAL COMPENSATION COMMENSURATE WITH EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**

Duties

Department Management Interface with local business and industry to determine training needs in the assigned programs areas Develop course and program offerings, within continuing education, to support the identified needs Facilitate the selection and ordering of textbooks Manage any conflict within department; striving to find an amicable resolution Review, evaluate, and assess departmental courses/programs periodically, facilitating innovation in curricular and instructional development in keeping with the mission and vision of the College Recommend appropriate revisions to the plan of study, course objectives, and other departmental program information to the Dean Ensure each departmental program is in full compliance with the requirements for accreditation, certification, and other standards as stipulated by NCCCS Work collaboratively with other divisional department heads and advisory boards. Personnel Management Recruit, interview, and recommend the appointment of faculty, full-time and adjunct, to the Dean and provide appropriate orientation Ensure faculty recruitment and employment practices are non-discriminatory. Submit all hiring documents and verification of credentials for all departmental faculty Assist departmental faculty in course planning, instructional delivery, and classroom management Prepare a master schedule of course offerings each semester that meet the needs of the departmental programs and the students, and is within the guidelines of any accrediting body requirements; assigning teaching schedules for faculty within workload policy guidelines Supervise and evaluate the operation of all classes and departmental faculty in accordance with policy, including classroom observations Identify and recommend professional development needs of the departmental faculty Conduct classroom observations of adjunct faculty Resolve student grievances with instructors and classroom management, when justified Maintain grievance policy and records Communicate faculty needs to Dean Encourage sound educational practices and student engagement Budget Management Recommend departmental needs for personnel, equipment, supplies, facilities, and other resources during the annual planning process to the Dean through the Good to Great and budget processes Coordinate the requisition of resources and services, including equipment, supplies, facilities and other materials required for the effective delivery of instruction Manage the departmental budget, regularly monitoring the status of expenditures and implementing inventory control methods Classroom Instruction Teach all assigned courses, a range of 6-9 contact hours, for the full duration of scheduled instruction Ensure that each class session contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains guidelines Teach an academic success class, as needed Evaluate, document, and stores student progress and provide appropriate, timely feedback Incorporate appropriate instructional technology to enhance student learning Provide and/or facilitate quality experiences in laboratory and/or clinical settings to meet departmental needs Maintain cleanliness of instructional areas and laboratories Ensure the proper operation of classroom/lab equipment, reporting any malfunctions to the appropriate person(s) Develop and distribute course syllabi according to established template providing appropriate information to students concerning course expectations and evaluation criteria Other Services to Students Maintain appropriate office hours and accessibility for students, a minimum of 2 hours a week. Serve as educational advisor to students by providing academic and employment planning Participate in semester advising and registration activities as assigned Assist in the recruitment and retention efforts of the College, by helping with tour groups, senior workshops, College Days, follow-up visits, and other recruiting activities Advocate and provide motivation for students Divisional Administrative Expectations Prepare and submit instructional records, reports, grades, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner meeting all deadlines, checking for accuracy, correctness and completeness of all data Exert an effort to remain current in discipline and instructional methods through professional development activities offered by the College and other opportunities including attendance at off-campus activities, webinars, etc., as feasible Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and other announced co-curricular activities of the College Maintain proper communication and supportive relationships at all times with all other units and branches of the college Engages communities of interest for the purpose of continuous program improvement Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations, as well as to meet the needs of the discipline, department, division, and College Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required:

Minimum of an AAS degree in either machining or an industrial trades program area from a regionally accredited institution. Two years work experience in either machining or industrial trades Preferred: One year supervisory experience Two years teaching experience in higher education College Requirements of all Employees
