Essential Job Duties The Intermediate Care (IMC) Technician provides high-quality nursing care for a varied population of hospitalized small animals and exotic species within the Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center. The IMC serves as the 24/7 progressive care unit for the hospital, offering exposure to a wide range of specialty cases and collaborative learning opportunities.
This position works closely with clinicians, students, and staff across multiple specialty services to deliver coordinated, compassionate, and expert patient care. The IMC Technician performs advanced technical duties such as patient admission and assessment, diagnostic and treatment support, medication administration, post-anesthetic and post-surgical monitoring, and operation of specialized medical equipment.
Success in this role requires strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability in a fast-paced teaching environment. Additionally, this position requires the ability to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis with or without accommodation. The IMC Technician plays a key role in mentoring veterinary students and fostering a culture of learning, professionalism, and excellence in patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Admit, assess, and monitor patients; implement and document individualized care plans in collaboration with clinicians and students. Perform nursing duties including TPRs, venipuncture, peripheral and central catheter placement, transfusion support, and medication administration. Monitor and manage patients recovering from anesthesia and surgery, as well as those with respiratory, neurological, or infectious conditions. Operate and maintain specialized patient care equipment such as IV fluid pumps, syringe pumps, wound vacuums, pulse oximeters, and BP monitors. Maintain accurate medical records, support student learning, and ensure compliance with hospital infection control, OSHA, EHS, and safety standards.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors. Demonstrated proficiency in patient monitoring, anesthesia recovery, and advanced veterinary nursing techniques. Strong communication, mentoring, and teamwork skills in a collaborative, educational environment. Proven ability to prioritize tasks, exercise sound judgment, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced clinical setting. Familiarity with veterinary information systems and electronic medical recordkeeping.
