Mechanical Fitter (Special Purpose Machinery)
We’re working in partnership with a long-established engineering firm that designs, builds, and installs special purpose machinery. They’re a close-knit, hands-on team who pride themselves on building high-quality, bespoke equipment — and they’re now looking to add a Mechanical Fitter to their growing workshop.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, craftsmanship, and being part of a collaborative team where every day can bring something different.
Mechanical Fitter - The Role
You’ll be joining a small, skilled team of fitters and engineers responsible for the mechanical assembly, fitting, and occasional installation of bespoke machinery. The work is primarily mechanical, but there’s plenty of scope for variety depending on your skills and interests.
Typical tasks will include:
Building and assembling special purpose machines from drawings and specifications
Fitting mechanical components (bearings, shafts, pneumatics, etc.)
Assisting with basic machining and fabrication as needed
Supporting electrical fitting or wiring tasks (if you have the aptitude)
Occasionally attending site for installation or commissioning (optional)
It’s the kind of environment where everyone mucks in — when it’s “all hands to the pump”, the team pull together to get the job done, whatever the task may be.
Mechanical Fitter - About You
We’re looking for a practical, adaptable engineer who enjoys variety and takes pride in doing a job well.
Essential:
Strong background in mechanical fitting or assembly
Experience building special purpose machinery, automation, or similar equipment
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
Willingness to get involved across different areas of the workshop
Desirable:
Some basic electrical knowledge (e.g. wiring, panel work, or commissioning support)
Experience in machining, fabrication, or laser cutting
What’s On Offer
A 37-hour week with a half day on Friday
A varied and hands-on role with a supportive, skilled team
Opportunity to develop multi-disciplinary skills (mechanical, electrical, machining, laser)
Optional site work if you enjoy getting out on installations
If you’re a mechanical fitter who enjoys building things from scratch, solving problems, and being part of a small team that genuinely values craftsmanship and flexibility, we’d love to hear from you.
