DIRECTOR OF BANDS AT LAKE WYLIE HIGH SCHOOL

Qualifications: South Carolina certification as required for the position, or eligible for appropriate certification with a strong GPA Bachelor's Degree Outstanding verbal and written communication skills Knowledge of effective and innovative instructional techniques Proven experience working with high school students Knowledge of instructional technology and its application to teaching Proven experience with performance band activities Successful experience with championship competition at local and state levels Skill in interpersonal relations with students, parents, teachers, staff, and the general public Outstanding references from current and former supervisors Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable Reports To : Principal

Job Goal:

The purpose of the Director of Bands at Lake Wylie High School is to develop in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of the general culture; to teach techniques of instrumental music; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; and to develop knowledge and skills in listening to and reading music.

Performance Functions:

Teaches skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, and in instrumental music Oversees Lake Wylie High School's instrumental music program in grades 6-12 Plans and executes a balanced musical band program in grades 6-12 and organizes daily class time Provides individual and small-group instruction when necessary to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil Uses a wide repertoire of music appropriate for the age and skill levels of students taught Maintains school-owned equipment and controls the storage of such equipment Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, rehearsals, and performances. Plans, rehearses, and directs students in band performance shows for school and community Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records Communicates effectively with parents and school counselors on student progress Develops show material, rehearses, and performs in band competitions annually Supports and provides student course elective opportunities such as jazz ensemble, steel drums, or comparable offerings Provides technical assistance when necessary in technological areas of lighting, sound, etc. Prepares students to participate and perform at such activities as local parades, marching contests (in-state and out-of-state), concert festivals, and athletic events (football home and away games), as well as special community functions Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities Participates in faculty-related activities as expected by the school and/or district administration Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities Establish a strong rapport with the community through high visibility and good communication Establishes a strong, supportive culture of parent and community involvement Oversees the band parent organizations and/or committees Specific Job Requirements:

Possess and utilize excellent team-building skills Accept delegated responsibilities willingly Able to work under occasional stress Demonstrate a high level of initiative in job performance Communicate effectively with a diverse community Physical Requirements:

Ability to move about classrooms, rehearsal spaces, stages, and outdoor performance areas to direct and supervise students. Ability to stand for extended periods while conducting rehearsals, directing performances, and supervising students. Frequent walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and arm movements are required for conducting and demonstrating techniques. Must occasionally lift and/or move musical instruments, equipment, risers, and storage cases. Ability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends for rehearsals, performances, competitions, and travel. Ability to handle musical instruments, adjust equipment, and operate classroom and performance technology. Ability to project voice clearly in large rehearsal spaces, gymnasiums, and outdoor areas; ability to demonstrate proper breathing techniques when needed. Ability to work indoors in classrooms, auditoriums, and gyms, as well as outdoors during marching band practices and performances in varying weather conditions; exposure to moderate to high noise levels. Ability to travel with students to competitions, performances, and events, which may include evenings and weekends.

Terms of Employment:

240 days; salary and work year to be established by the Clover School District Board
