Job Title: Allied Sterile Processing Tech Profession: Sterile Processing Technician Specialty: Sterile Processing Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Evenings Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician License: Certification in Sterile Processing Certifications: BLS, Certified Sterile Processor Must-Have: - Certified Sterile Processor (HSPA or CBSPD) - BLS - Minimum of 3 years of experience as Sterile Processing Technician - Experience in a large hospital setting (500 beds or more) - Travel experience (6 months) - Two professional references from the last two assignments Description: The Department of Sterile and Materials Processing is a state-of-the-art instrument processing and sterilizing facility. The Sterile Processing Department assists in the decontamination, high-level disinfection, assembling, sterilization and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans. These functions are performed using advanced decontamination, high-level disinfection, and sterilization equipment. Instruments, trays, and pans are assembled, processed, and distributed to various surgical suites and clinical areas. These instruments, trays, and pans are tracked by a bar code system. Responsibilities include inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts. You will select the method of packaging and sterilization in consultation with the Processing Manager as needed. You are expected to examine surgical instrumentation for cleanliness and proper assembly and function. You will assemble instrument sets while ensuring the appropriate number and type of instruments per established protocols. Handling of instruments must be appropriate to ensure sterilization. You will complete count and supply sheets to document the contents of trays. Established procedures must be followed to package and wrap trays and instruments to guarantee sterilization. You are responsible for operating steam sterilizers in accordance with established procedures. You will check time, pressure, and temperature gauges frequently to maintain proper levels. You will load and unload sterilizers and place items on shelves for distribution. Simple maintenance of sterilizers such as cleaning drain baskets will also be part of your responsibilities. You will assure sterility by preparing cultures and reviewing processed test packs. You must interpret the results and complete the required documentation. Checking and adjusting medical equipment according to specific procedures is necessary to ensure proper operation prior to issuing. All equipment not meeting specifications should be sent to the appropriate area for repair. Decontamination of surgical instruments and equipment must follow established procedures to prevent cross-contamination. You are expected to set up decontamination equipment for operation, clean and disinfect equipment and the work area upon completion of your shift, and handle infectious waste and linen per established protocol to ensure continuous workflow and compliance with department, legal, and regulatory standards. Receiving and storing supplies from vendors and hospital areas will be part of your duties. Check stock as it is received against requisitions, document stock received, and report any discrepancies. Assisting in maintaining par levels of inventory is also required. You will document and fill orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas and deliver supplies as needed. Maintaining records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment not meeting specifications that are referred for repair is essential. You will be responsible for quality assurance on all sterile supplies and instruments. Daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts will be required.
