Software Quality Engineer Manager

Overview The Software Quality Engineering Manager leads and develops a high-performing SQE team while contributing to quality engineering initiatives. This role balances management (50%) with direct engineering involvement (50%), ensuring product and process excellence across the development lifecycle. The manager drives a culture of automation, performance, and continuous improvement, supporting healthcare software compliance and delivering safe, effective outcomes for providers and patients.

Responsibilities

Define and evolve the quality engineering strategy, including test automation, CI/CD integration, performance testing, and risk-based validation

Design, implement, and maintain scalable automated tests for UI, API, and integration scenarios

Establish and track quality engineering-focused metrics (e.g., automated coverage, pipeline pass rates, escaped defect rate) to inform team and leadership decisions

Implement modern tools and practices (e.g., automated end-to-end workflow testing, shift-left test design, synthetic data generation) to improve efficiency and reduce manual overhead

Maintain test traceability to requirements, producing reliable audit evidence

Partner with Product Owners, Business Analysts, and Developers to ensure clear acceptance criteria, testable requirements, and automation-ready stories

Participate early in requirements, design, and code reviews, advocating for “quality by design”

Champion a culture of accountability, collaboration, and shared ownership of quality outcomes

Drive adoption of AI-powered tools and practices to elevate software quality engineering, including automation, predictive analytics, and intelligent workflow orchestration

Lead agile ceremonies (stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives) and ensure disciplined, transparent execution

Advocate for and model quality engineering best practices across cross-functional teams

Mentor and develop SQE team members, fostering growth in technical and quality skills

Required Skills and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in technical or business-related fields such as Computer Science, Information Systems, or Business Administration

5+ years in software QA/quality engineering, with at least 2 years in a senior or lead role

3+ years designing and implementing automated test frameworks for web applications

2+ years managing engineers, with a track record of developing talent

Strong foundation in manual testing practices, exploratory testing, and defect management

Experience translating requirements into effective automated and manual tests

Proficiency with test and CI/CD tools (e.g., Cypress, Azure DevOps, GitHub)

Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills

Deep knowledge of Agile practices and experience collaborating in Agile ceremonies

Proven ability to influence teams, promote engineering-focused quality practices, and drive continuous improvement

Preferred Skills

Experience with performance, security, or interoperability testing in healthcare systems

Exposure to test data management and synthetic data generation

Healthcare or regulated software experience
