BRIEF DESCRIPTION

This is a non-supervisory position. Duties include, but are not limited to, accurately reading meters and ensuring information is correctly inputted into the automated metering software program, receiving and completing work orders on the computerized work order program, installing water meters, repairing water leaks at the meter and service line, replacing/installing meter dials, perform cut offs, performs meter turn on, maintaining meter boxes. May act as department supervisor in the absence of the supervisor, assist in training new employees, and provide excellent customer service to the public regarding meter issues and questions. Will assist other utility departments as needed.

This position is considered an essential position within the public works department and therefore must abide by the Public Works Essential Employee Policy which may require 24 hour emergency call in, extended working hours, mandatory overtime, working days other than regular scheduled days, and reporting to work when other City Offices may close during regular business hours for reasons such as but not limited to pandemic, natural disaster, act of terrorism, adverse weather conditions, and power outages.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to learn the proper and safe use of powered maintenance equipment Ability to learn the safe and proper handling of cleaning chemicals Ability to make minor plumbing and mechanical repairs under the direction of the Meter Supervisor Knowledge to install and repair minor plumbing Ability to learn the safe and proper use of power tools such as drills and hand tools Ability to properly use shovels, picks, or other manual digging devices

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school graduate or equivalent

Technical training in plumbing or a related field is preferred; OR

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

A Valid Class C Texas driver's license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record

Class D license in Water Distribution preferred

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS:

Primarily works in an outdoor environment, but is also able to operate indoors when necessary. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during the summer and winter months. Works in small, cramped work areas at times.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard office equipment, including multi-line telephone, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, shredder, printer, etc.

Electronic meter reading device, rakes, shovels, picks, various other manual digging devices, hammer, saw, screwdriver, and other similar tools, ladders, floor mop, floor dust mop, and hand broom.
