The Town of Clayton seeks an Instrumentation Control / Pump Technician for its Water Resource Department, Water Sewer Preventative Maintenance Division. The role involves troubleshooting electrical and mechanical issues with pumps and controls, pulling and repairing pumps, maintaining SCADA systems, and performing preventive maintenance at wastewater treatment and collections system stations. On-call duties and subject to call-back work are included in this service‑critical position.

Responsibilities

Operate digital multi‑meters, amp meters, loop meters, and related equipment to troubleshoot electrical issues.

Operate boom trucks, electric hoists, or hand‑cranked hoists to pull pumps for inspection, repair, and replacement.

Perform preventive maintenance and repair equipment located at the wastewater treatment plant and in the collections system: clean pumps, clean wet wells, check generators and bypass pumps.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair parts or equipment due to failure; monitor and maintain the SCADA system and process control at the wastewater treatment plant.

Perform permitting‑required confined‑space entries in manholes, wet wells, check‑valve vaults, meter vaults, and other water and sewer appurtenances.

Install temporary generators and bypass pumps as needed.

Create and complete work orders using the Town’s work order software.

Troubleshoot electrical and instrument equipment such as floats, relays, control panels, and all other related structures at wastewater plants and pump stations.

Install and repair variable‑speed drives, motorized valves, electrical and electronic panels.

Record pump hours and averages for review by the Plant Maintenance Superintendent and/or Water Reclamation Superintendent.

Assist with cleaning of the pump station wet wells in the collections system as needed.

Maintain necessary tools and inventory on departmental vehicles and keep them stocked.

Perform all other related tasks as directed.

Serve in the on‑call rotation for the wastewater treatment plant and fill in as needed in the collections system lift station rotation.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions needed in the work.

Working knowledge of the principles and properties of electronic circuit theory and application.

Working knowledge of related technology including hardware, software, electronic component troubleshooting and installation, and use and repair of process instrumentation and telemetry.

Working knowledge of wastewater treatment principles and skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.

Working knowledge of the safe use of common hand and power tools.

Working knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment.

Working knowledge of the tools used for troubleshooting electrical circuits.

Ability to detect mechanical, electrical, or electronic malfunctioning of assigned equipment by testing, observation, sound, and chart readings, and take proper remedial actions.

Ability to read and follow schematic drawings, blueprints, and written and oral instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co‑workers, and supervisors.

Working knowledge of completing simple reports.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED required.

Status as a Vocation or Technical in Electrical preferred.

Must possess a valid NC Class A driver’s license with tanker endorsement and obtain it within the first twelve months.

Must obtain a Maintenance Technologist Grade 1 certification and Collections Grade 1 certification within twelve months of hire.

Some experience in electrical troubleshooting and general equipment maintenance related to wastewater treatment.

Depending on the position, the Town may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
