The ideal candidate will perform a variety of field investigations and inspections to ensure compliance with state, local, and federal pretreatment and environmental regulations. They will issue citations, take and test wastewater samples, and respond to emergency situations affecting sewer discharges and industrial storm‑water regulations.
Beyond the normal work schedule, this position will include being on call 24 hours a day for a minimum of a week on a rotational basis, requiring the ability to rapidly respond and be on site within a short period.
We currently have one vacancy in the Utility Services Department, with hiring to begin immediately following the close of this recruitment.
Responsibilities
Perform field investigations and inspections of industrial and commercial businesses to ensure compliance with wastewater pretreatment, storm‑water, and other environmental regulations; issue environmental control permits as necessary.
Survey potential sources of non‑compliance, issue citations and violation notices, revoke operating permits, and recommend control measures for environmental deficiencies.
Compile data and evaluate inspection findings; prepare inspection reports recommending compliance methods.
Review building plans to ensure proposed facilities or equipment comply with environmental regulations and codes.
Inspect sewers, storm drains, and other water courses to locate pollution sources from industrial wastes; respond to complaints and enforce municipal codes.
Obtain and test wastewater samples; evaluate laboratory reports to determine compliance.
Install and monitor wastewater sampling equipment; determine appropriate fees based on sample quality and quantity.
Confer with industrial dischargers, interpret wastewater ordinances, and explain pretreatment requirements.
Review new business licenses for environmental concerns; advise businesses on the City's pollution prevention program; conduct required inspections.
Respond to environmental emergencies 24‑hour, evaluate situations, and direct clean‑up operations.
Prepare and present evidence in prosecution of violations; testify in court as required.
Maintain accurate inspection files and submit required federal reports.
Respond to public inquiries courteously and resolve complaints efficiently.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications Education:
Completion of 12th grade plus college‑level coursework in biology, microbiology, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field. One additional year of related experience may substitute for the coursework; a total of at least four years of related experience is required.
Experience:
Three years of responsible environmental control or wastewater treatment experience. Associates or bachelors may substitute for a year of experience as detailed in the original posting.
License or Certificate
Valid driver’s license.
Nevada or California Industrial Waste Inspector Certification within one year of hire.
40‑hour HAZWOPER Certification within one year of hire; maintain annually.
