RESEARCH ENGINEER I (SYSTEMS ENGINEER) (2)
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking an Entry-level Research Systems Engineer for UAB's Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) group. The role supports flight operations for payload systems in space applications, developing system-level documents, functional and verification testing for complex engineering hardware and devices.
EITD was created to support the development of specialized research instruments for ground and microgravity-based research experiments. Since 1990, UAB has grown into a full‑service organization providing solutions from concept through fabrication, deployment, and operational support to the aeronautic and life sciences industry.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in development, implementation, and analysis of technical products and systems.
Support meetings, teleconferences, and travel as required by projects.
Travel to support testing and launch/return activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
(Annual Salary: $57,940 - $94,150)
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in Engineering and one (1) year of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. STEM‑related field is preferred.
The ideal candidate may be required to work nights and weekends, as necessary, to support real‑time flight operations. Travel to support testing and launch/return activities for approx. 7‑day periods, 5‑10 trips per year possible.

Ability to use various engineering and documentation/analysis software, MS Word, and Excel.
Ability to problem‑solve.

Interpersonal skills.
Organizational skills (technical).
Communication skills (verbal and written).

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Systems Engineering experience with space‑flight or aerospace applications.
Systems Engineering experience for development and production of embedded / integrated systems.
Systems Engineering experience with ISO9001 and AS9100.
Quality Programs Operations support for NASA or commercial space activities.
Experience using CAD software (e.g., SolidEdge or SolidWorks).
