The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate and supervise the Cumberland County WIC Program Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program. The person in this position will also provide more extensive nutrition assessments, counseling, and follow-up for high-risk prenatal, post- partum women, infants and children being served by the Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC). This position performs supervisory work in program coordination, planning, policy development, and training. Examples of Duties

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

Develops and manages breastfeeding policies for the local agency's Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) program. . Provides ongoing supervision and feedback for four (4) BFPC's. Mentors new BFPC(s) by providing routine follow-up and guidance in the early days of the job. Acts on all referrals from BFPC(s) regarding complex breastfeeding situations beyond their scope of practice and makes referrals out as necessary. Perform outreach activities as assigned/requested to foster community awareness and collaboration. Perform program coordination, planning, policy development and training. Using program guidance and professional knowledge assess the medical/nutritional status of program applicants. Provide guidance and training to Competent Professional Authority (CPA), clerical staff, students, and volunteers as needed or requested. Medicaid Nutrition Therapy (MNT) documentation for those participants receiving Medicaid and meets the required number of WIC contacts. Based on identified problem areas and needs, provide appropriate nutrition education counseling, documentation and follow-ups. Provide initial and ongoing, in-depth nutrition screenings of low-risk and high-risk patients/participants. Develop nutritional care plans to assist in the nutritional management of high-risk complex, medical conditions and aiding patients in becoming knowledgeable about nutritional/medical condition in reference to nutritional needs, source of food, selection and dietary modifications to maintain good health. Serve as a resource to other nutritionists in the WIC Program, health department staff and community providers. Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director. Minimum Qualifications Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education with a Master's degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Nutrition from an accredited college or university and one year experience

or Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education and two years nutrition experience

Management Preference:

International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited universities. Advanced knowledge and skill in comprehensive nutrition assessment and care planning, including problem diagnosis, counseling, and evaluation of clients from diverse backgrounds and ages, who have a multitude of complex, high-risk medical needs. Advanced knowledge and skill in theoretical principles and practices of normal and clinical nutrition and dietetics, particularly in areas of disease pathophysiology and medical rehabilitation. Advanced, in-depth expertise in a clinical specialty area may be required. Advanced level of knowledge in case management and care coordination, health care ethics, documentation in the medical record, quality assurance, management of nutrition services. Advanced skill in interpreting nutrition standards to other health professionals and the public is needed. Advanced level of knowledge of the organization and delivery of medical, hospital, hospice, and home care in the community, of medical terminology, and of the roles of the various members of the interdisciplinary health care team. Demonstrated ability in staff development, assuring staff accountability, and conducting personnel performance evaluations. Ability to adapt to emerging or unprecedented problems by extending accepted methods or developing new methods and interventions. Ability to prepare and justify budget requests as well as, monitor, analyze, and manage allocated resources. Basic skill in the consultant process, both as consultant and consultee. Strong knowledge of current scientific information regarding nutrition, diet, and health and the ability to relate this information to clients, professionals, and the general public. Full range of skill in conducting a nutrition education or community needs assessment. Strong ability to interpret policy and protocols into operational procedures and work priorities. Full range of skill in organizing and coordinating the work of others. Full range of skill in presenting ideas orally and in a writing a clear, concise manner.

Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Background check and negative drug test are required.
