Veterinary Assistant Large Animal Overnight
This Veterinary Assistant position primarily provides patient care for clinical livestock cases in the Livestock Veterinary Services whose treatments are being overseen by faculty, residents, and interns. This position will spend the majority of the time working in the livestock facility, however depending on caseload in Livestock this position may also be asked to assist in Equine Critical Care and Medicine, Large Animal Radiology, and other large animal services. This position requires a knowledge of various medical procedures, biosecurity surveillance, and proper equipment usage. This position will assist in the case management on a day-to-day basis by providing support services such as stocking and inventory management, cleaning and maintaining equipment after use, and providing continuity of patient care. Additionally, this position provides direction of third and fourth year veterinary students, and their responsibilities related to patient care within the livestock hospital. This is an essential worker position, and the successful candidate must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. Position Minimum Qualifications: (1) year of experience in a veterinary clinical setting as a veterinary assistant. Must have the ability to safely and proficiently handle livestock, including cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and camelids. Minimum one (1) year of livestock experience. Basic computer skills, including the ability to work in an electronic medical record. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position. Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a large animal veterinary hospital. Experience working swing and/or overnight shifts. Essential Job Duties: Patient Care: Assist in providing clinical support to Livestock patients under the direction of senior staff, interns, residents, and clinicians. Proper restraint of patients without injury to patient, self, or others. Including use of restraint equipment. Monitor patients and recognize changes in patient status/condition. Use judgement and knowledge to determine when to alert changes in patient status/condition to senior staff, technicians, interns, residents, or faculty clinicians. Properly perform medical treatments on hospitalized patients, assist with clinical procedures and direct patient care. Assist in receiving new cases/patients including setting up for the case, taking history from the client, obtaining client signature on necessary consent forms (financial, treatment, sedation, etc.), and maintaining patient, client, student, and staff safety throughout. Medical Procedures: Ensuring safety, biosecurity, and sterile protocols are followed. Clipping and prepping patients for procedures and surgeries. Assisting with anesthesia under direction of veterinarian (intern, resident, faculty clinician). Setting up for procedures and surgeries with appropriate tools and supplies. Assisting with procedures and surgeries under direction of intern, resident, or faculty clinician. Rumen fluid collection. Hospital and Equipment Care: Submits work orders for equipment repairs as needed. Checks supplies and drugs for expiration dates. Stock supplies in the clinic when needed. Assists with biosecurity and cleaning of the VTH livestock facility and equipment. Applies biosecurity protocols appropriately when managing appointments and patients. Maintains disinfection footbaths/foot-mats throughout the facility. Hose and disinfect floors/rooms/equipment if needed. Disinfects halters, lead ropes, grooming tools, muzzles, and hoof equipment, tilt table, stocks, refrigerators, microwaves, counter tops, and patient drug/supply storage bins. Cleans instruments and clinical equipment. Maintains biosecurity supplies and equipment within the livestock section. Conducts monthly environmental salmonella surveillance. Workflow & Team Coordination: Managing the necessary tasks during a shift and knowing when to adjust due to emergencies. Making decisions about support needs, such as when to call in additional help of an on-call technician or an overseeing veterinarian (intern, resident, faculty clinician). Demonstrates teamwork as a congenial member of the Livestock Veterinary Services and VHS team. Provides a safe working environment within the livestock hospital. Administrative Duties: Ability to use and interpret electronic medical record, patient treatment sheets, and clinician orders. Ensure that all required controlled drug paperwork is complete including controlled drug form and drug disposition forms. Submission of lab orders through electronic medical record system.
